Bill Bruford. And Phil Collins as a second one: one of the most creative drummers and PERCUSSIONIST I know.

Bruford! And if you think he doesn't rock, just listen to "Red", "Larks Tongues Pt. 2" and "Sleepless"! P.S. Much as I love him, he did play on one (and only one!) dud album: AWBH Live.

Modern jazz is a mostly a very progressive genre (in my oppinion that is). Prog-jazz (jazzrock/fusion) is especially related to other prog-rock genres and I find he's more between prog-jazz and other prog-genres, meaning he sometimes has played 'evolved' jazz and sometimes more classical progressive music but always prog (in my eyes). By my definition progressive music is 'more developed' and 'evolved' music meaning that a higher level of complication of structures characterises the music. Most of modern jazz falls in my oppinion under the definition of 'proggish'-jazz, because the progression of it and because it is, well, more evolved. But coming to the subject and the poll, I find it really difficult to choose between Peart, Portnoy (quite much agree on your view about Portnoy, Joseth) and Bruford. It's got to be Bruford for me though.

I relate to this oppinion, but still would say Bruford, he's just incredible...The past days I have been playing ''Red'' again and whoa! what a fantastic album and great drumming on it!

I would assume he means Martin Lopez (Mendez plays the bass) of Opeth, which must be embarrassing for someone with an Opeth sig.
EDIT: ok, so Bruford has a jazzy style, that doesn't make him any less "prog". Also, proggy drumming isn't anything in particular, but drumming that goes along with prog music. There is nothing definite about it; sure, many famous prog bands were characterized by many time sig changes and syncopation/polyrhythms, but they aren't in every prog song. Bruford does all of those things, a lot. So how is he not proggy (are you suggesting that we not allow for jazz rock/fusion drummers like Cobham, who is AMAZING)?
not every drummer has to sound alike

I agree.

It is difficult to choose between Peart and Bruford. These two are the best on the list by far IMO.

Probably Bruford out of the ones you list. Phil Collins is underrated though.

Easily Bill Bruford. He's very interesting, does some great polyrhythmic beats and I don't think he's ever done a bad recording.

You`re forgetting that album by Absolute Everywhere from the television special In Search of Ancient Gods back in the mid seventies. A guy reviewed it here the other day and more or less hit the nail on the head by giving it one star.

Portnoy. Why? Because he never ceases to amaze me and his work with Neal Morse shows that he's not just a metal drummer. He can play any style fluently and that versatility puts him at the top in my book.

Bruford is a God. In my opinion his ability to improvise sets him apart from the rest.
Portnoy - even though I don't like DT, his side projects show his versatility, restraint, and talent. I agree that he has surpassed Peart .
Peart - inspired probably more drummers than any on the list, and my first drum idol. For my current taste, he is too mechanic, and his 20+ year solo... c'mon.
White and Collins don't belong on this list; Gavin Harrison and Carl Palmer do, and IMO, Harrison's work is as good as any. He is showcased heavily in FoaBP.
Let's agree that both Portnoy and Harrison are standing on giants' shoulders

1. Neil Peart - Has inspired me more than any other human being on the planet 2. Bill Bruford - Simply put: he's amazing. Original and talented. 3. Phil Collins - Restrained and interesting, I like him a lot. 4. Alan White - A worthy replacement for Bruford 5. Mike Portnoy - I hope I don't get too much flak for saying this, but he's vastly overrated, IMO. Nothing I've heard from him has ever really jumped out at me, and his solos tend to be fairly sloppy
My own addition to the list would have to be Danny Carey.

Well, welcome joseth on kings
I will choose Bruford, but palmer and portney are right up there. Brufords jazzy style completes the Yes and Crimson sound.

best drummer
Symphonic Prog : Bruford no contest it's the jazz thing Yes was never the same after he left
Metal Prog: Portnoy no question he anchors the DTsound and no disrespect to the other but DT would not exit if it was not for him.
