Who was/is the best in mixing prog rock & hard rock elements?

For me Uriah Heep joined hard, groundbreaking sound with classic prog structure (especially in July Morning, Salisbury, Shadow of Grief, Gyspy, Pilgrim and so on).

P.S. I mean hard rock no prog-metal.

Nice poll. You mean, who represents heavy prog the best?Smile

I voted for Birth Control, with Heep close second.

Bloodrock should also be mentioned, IMHO.

And that other obscure band...what was the name...led baloon or something...Wink

I must be getting old. I've never heard 90% of the bands on  that list. Who the hell are these people?

I can say Deep Purple was one of the first bands to do the rock band/orchestra thing so I guess they qualify.

I'm sure that you aren't too old 'cause most of these bands are just from 70'...and lots of them are well known (especially Uriah Heep, Birth Control, Jane, Kansas, Lucifer's Friend, Spooky Tooth & Warhorse)

P.S. I'm really interested why this pool was replaced to "non-prog music"

Atomic Rooster is my favorite from that "Hard Prog" genre.

Captain Beyond is my second-favorite from the genre.

BTW, these are mostly bands classified as art-rock.  Shouldn't this be in the prog polls?

Yeah, Still Life is really great but I think that it's hard to call them heavy prog 'cause there are no guitars .

you probably confused Epsilon with Epitath. Epsilon is almost rockabilly done the 70's manner.

Epitath deserves to in the Archives.

Many bands I don't know, but The old man and the sea is on my list of bands to check out.

I'd like to mention a few Scandinavian bands:

Høst: Both "På sterke vinger" and "Hardt mot hardt", but their second is my favorite. Heavy, symphonic. Should appeal to fans of 70s Italian heavyprog.

Trettioåriga kriget: "Krigssång". Haven't got their first yet, but there is a sample on their page here in the archives.
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=639

Råg i Ryggen: Sometimes like a mix between Uriah Heep and Høst.
http://www.recordheaven.net/
(Transubstans records: Scroll down for an mp3)
"One and only album from outstanding band from the Stockholm area. Released in '75, this is nothing less than a milestone in Swedish hardrock history. An album filled with progressive and guitar driven hardrock tunes with over the top fuzz dual guitars and moogs / hammond. Very intense and powerful, and always, when mentioned, described as one of the real jewels from Scandinavia. File next to URIAH HEEP and ZARATHUSTRA. Never on CD before, and adding 3 live bonus tracks, 1 of them; "Land over the rainbow" is never heard before! This is a must for all friends of 70's hardrock from Scandinavia !!"

Thule: "Natt", in particular, but also "Ultima Thule". The others have their moments.

(Check out "Goilltigei" in particular)

I have only heard of Deep, Heep and Kansas...Confused
I was born in the late 80's, so I guess that's not really my fault. I voted for Purple.

No, I thought about Epsilon (I don't even know such a band like Epitaph). I don't think that Epsilon is rockabilly, I think that it's quite good band which mixed "classic" rock'n'roll with heavy & prog elemnts (especially organ playin').

Many Italian bands are in my opinion the best mix between hard rock and prog: New Trolls, early Rovescio della Medaglia, Quella Vecchia Locanda (first album), Osanna, Atlantide, Balletto di Bronzo's "Sirio 2222"...

I'd also add the German band Frumpy
