Hey Useful Rick Wakeman's solo career? What about:

  1. Six Wives of Henry the VIII
  2. Myths and Legends
  3. Journey to the Centre of the Earth
  4. No Earthly Connection
  5. Criminal Record

That 5 albums are outstanding, I know he has a lot of boring New Age, but he has other good albums too IMHO.

Six Wives is decent, but I would never proclaim it outstanding.  I do know that Journey to the Center of the Earth made me laugh out loud, and that kinda made me lose faith in Rick.

  1. IQ
  2. Styx
  3. Rush
  4. Mostly Autumn
  5. Kansas

Dream Theater, Enchant, Jadis, Landmarq, Arena, Symphony X, Triumvirat...  may also "qualify", but I haven't listened to them enough to tell.

Although I agree with Dream Theater,to include ELP,Genesis and Rush is laughable. Why do you bother even coming here?

I'm with Useful here.Rick's solo output, with the exception of Six Wives,is just plain embarrassing. Journey TTCOTE and Arthur make me laugh out loud too!

RichardH:

It is a testimony to the eclectic nature of Progressive Rock that some of the "big-hitters" are disliked by many of the members. It is a matter of taste. Why should it be unacceptable to dislike Rush,ELP and Genesis, but OK to hate Dream Theater,Triumvirat and Amon Duul?

Big smile

My major dislikes at the moment are The Mars Volta (what a racket!),Jethro Tull (hey nonnie-nonnie) and Echolyn (much ado about nothing?).
i dont say they are the worst, but surely picking the worst is the same as picking your least favourite,so I would add Dream Theater and Magma to that list.

This is personal opinion ie,my taste.

I can't think of any bad bands

There is something good in all music, even Dream theater isn't all bad

Because I am a huge fan of progressive rock, maybe?

Couldn't say which I think are the worst prog artists. There are tracks by numerous prog artists that I dont like, but because I have disliked them so much I have never gone on to investigate anything else they did. For this reason I cant make a sound judgement.

I like prog rock to be played well, produced well and to meet the high standards set by many of the old masters. If it doesn't grab me in these respects very early on, I tend to give up on the artist in question.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

You've hit the nail on the head with Tangerine Dream,Gdub. A very over-rated band indeed.

Ah...

Such a nice thread...

There is only so much one can dislike, eh?

Too bad that we are only asked for five - I could probably list up to 130 prog artists/bands that I have a distinct dislike for...

hmm... 5 it is.

Dream Theater
Druid
Symphony X
Thinking Plague
Asia

From those five, i think that Thinking Plague is the only goup which has its moments...

Cheers

This is funny. Wakeman, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, among the worst artist? I don't understand a thing. Its ok to dislike them, but  deni its musical quality is outreogeous. But since everybody is entitled to an opinion, here I go:

-Stix

-Asia

-Mostly of neo.prog / prog metal.

Please forgive me for my crappy english!

  1. VDGG
  2. The Mars Volta
  3. Godspeed You
  4. StarCastle
  5. Asia

I'm not a fan of "avant-guard" prog - thus the first THREE !

Purely subjective of course - some people list Rush/Genesis/Yes/ELP/IQ/Dream Theater...Now that is CRAAZEEE - Coz these bands must have done material that appeals to almost any prog-fan because they are so main-stream....

But that's the whole point, Swinton! A lot of prog fans (myself included) love prog because it's a way of ESCAPING mainstream music. I never really cared about music until I discovered prog, and the reason was that I find mainstream music extremely boring. Rush, Genesis, ELP, etc don't really appeal to me for that very reason. There's nothing exciting about them. Personally, I'm dismayed to see the likes of Magma, VDGG and Thinking Plague being listed as they're the kind of groups that hold interest for me (though they're all quite 'dark' in their sound, and I should point out that I don't just listen to 'dark' music - I'm a huge Canterbury fan, for example). So yes, I'm rambling, but my point is this - not everyone wants simple, mainstream music. This is why progressive music can be so wonderful.

Genesis, Yes and, to some extent, ELP do appeal to me.

Rush, IQ and DT do not appeal to me.

Main-stream? I don't think it's the right word. But to my ears Rush and DT play  generic and derivative hard-rock/heavy metal with some nods towards prog/art rock (with annoying vocals to boot). The same goes for mostly all prog metal bands. And IQ's music and similar neo-prog (Marillion and It Bites are exceptions) just doesn't grab at all (actually, I think that kind of music is pretty annoying).

Radioactive - Your dislike covers a whole range of music there !

Does all DT, ELP, Porcupine, Saga, Marillion deserve your disdain - In my list I Have stated that the dischord of Bands like VDGG tends to put-me off, I am not ELP's biggest fan but they have produced some top-notch prog moments non-the-less !
