Haha, American Beauty is the only one I 'own'. Seems I made the right choice in which album to start with.

The essential Dead albums are American Beauty, Wake of the Flood, Mars Hotel, and any Dicks Picks/live material from 72, 74, 77. And Bobby's "Ace." All the rest of the pre-Terrapin material is about 3 stars, and everything after Terrapin pretty much blows (as Jerry had entered his ice cream and heroin phase.

This is my list.
1.
Pretty short.
An essential Grateful Dead album is an oxymoron to me.

I understand, I'm well past my Dead phase too. Although in all fairness, regardless of your personal tastes, it's pretty hard to claim that American Beauty is not a near perfect album of folk-rock/roots/americana. That's a great album.

I don't listen to their studio albums that much, they're very good but don't quite take me to the heights their live music does. Aoxomoxoa, Anthem of the Sun, American Beauty, Workingmans Dead and Terrapin Station are all the studio work I can think of that I've listened to.. Live/Dead, Rockin the Rhein, Dicks Picks 7, 24 and One From the Vault are some of my favorite live ones, but usually use archive.org to get concerts.

I've been a fan for yonks and used to follow the boys when they'd hit the east coast of the US on summer tours, but I don't think I've put on a Dead studio album in a decade. I don't put them on that much any more at all, in fact, but when I do it's one of the hundreds of live CDs I've collected over the years. A better idea would be "Top 10 DeadShows".

Studio albums:
- Workingmen's Dead
- American Beauty
- Wake of the Flood
- Blues for Allah
- Go to Heaven
- In the Dark
Live:
- Anthem of the Sun (although actually "made" and mixed in studio)
- Live Dead
- History of Grateful Dead Vol. 1, Bear's Choice
- Without a Net
These are all official releases, I have not heard much bootlegs or archival Dick's Picks series... :(

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

If you like Workingman and AB then you'll probably enjoy the live album from the following year ( skull and roses aka skullf**k), it has that good ole americana/folk/blues feel, some of my favorite covers are on there (special mention to Me & Bobby McGee). And if you like the Live/Dead album you'll want to go for the earlier albums even though they aren't as jam-based...and then of course the Dicks Picks series of re-released bootlegs - many fans like these more than the original live albums.
The great thing about the Dead is the abundance of quality live recording in addition to the different era's of studio albums....they remind me of King Crimson in a way.
