the darkest - or strangest - I know from that list is STGM... of course Octopus is a must eventually (but not dark)

Of those, I'd say Octopus is a must, and the other one is up for grabs

Get another Anekdoten instead of Vemod.  Like Nucleus, perhaps, or the new one, A Time of Day.  If you have them all except Vemod, then go for that.  Sleepytime Gorilla Museum would be my next suggestion.  And Änglagård.  From that list, they're the only ones I would consider if I were in your shoes (oh wait, VDGG is there as well as GG.  LOL   Can't turn up the old nose at that now, can I?)

Something Ian Anderson related.

If you have never listened to SGM, buy "Of natural history". Dark atmosphere (and brain meltdown) guaranteed.
Ayreon's THE actually is not that dark, though it's one of the best from the list IMO.
VdGg's album is always a good choice so you can wait with purchasing it. From the others I would vote for Anglagard's Hybris. Not only dark, but also unique and historically meaningful.
Just call me "X".

I'd go with Ayreon. You've got to have this one, it's a masterpiece.

Riverside - Second Life Syndrome ... Give it a listen, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

Van Der Graaf - If this is your first VdGG album, I'd go for Pawn Hearts or Godbluff before H to He Who Am The Only One

Other: Pain Of Salvation - Be

Vemod is one of the non-2000 albums you named, and it's already proven itself timeless and unique. Just buy it!

I'm a ProgMetal fan and though I liked 'Second Life Syndrome' at first, the more I listened the less impressed I was. There's just not much there when compared to acts like Luke Jaeger's Sleep Terror, Counter-World Experience, Behold.. the Arctopus, etc.
