I am  interested in the madchester genre and would like to find out more about it.  I have already heard the Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses and I like them both very much.  I was wondering if anyone who is familliar with the genre could give any recomendations as to what other bands or albums from that scene are worth listening to.

haha i wouldnt say it was a musical genre/sub-genre per se, more of a happy coincidence of dance music culture meeting indie-rock head on in late 80s/early 90s in of all places Manchester............the other big band from that time was Inspiral Carpets (heavy use of Farifsa organ).  the Charlatans if i'm not mistaken weren't from Manchester but their Hammond-Wah sound certainly put them in that 'big four with Roses, Mondays, Inspirals.

Also check out Northside

I've seen several of those bands live, years ago (apart from the Stone Roses) and I always thought the best were The Insprial Carpets.

Check out the film '24 Hour Party People' starring Steve Coogan, as factory records boss Tony Wilson. Excellent poytrayels of Joy Divsion, New Order and The Happy Mondays.
