This is a really strange post. Porcupine Tree isn't even prog metal... So its a really unfair poll. Im going with Porcupine Tree anyway, cause i think that this is an unfair pidgeonholed poll to make DT come out on top. Viva La Porcupine!

Gotta go with DT here! Although I can't agree with those saying "Systematic" is their masterpiece...let us not forget the true masterpiece that is "Metropolis Part II."

it might seam 'cool' to bash them now, but the debt of gratitude we owe DT is simply enormous...

you know what is ironic? Dream Theater's members are Porcupine Tree fans. Got ti?
Even thought at this moment I am a fan of both bands I voted for PT for the following reasons:
1.more better albums.
2. better vocalist and lyricist.
3. Even though they still sound like Pink Floyd a lot, they also do !have their original sound you know!
4. their solos aren't as self indulgent as DT's never ending solos.
5 . more feeling, more emotional, More honest, more sincere band ect.......
BUT I do think that DreamTheaters' musicians are better no doubt about that. their solos blow my mind.

In my eyes, Dream Theater is unidirectional. They don't offer much that is truly new. It is very easy to call them Prog Metal, and only Prog Metal. With the addition of Rudess, they became more so unevolving. The newest material sounds just like SFAM material. But they are a good band.
Porcupine Tree has many moods and varying sounds. They are Art Rock, Prog Metal, Ambient, Space Rock, and even Pop at times. Comparing Lighbulb Sun to Deadwing exhibits such a different overall sound. To me, a progressive band they way I'd like to see them all.
My vote goes to Porcupine Tree.

I have to agree with this from an observers point of view. I'm here because of many, many different bands however. I thank this site for letting me get familiar with many new-to-me bands.

Well Mr; petrucci and Mr. Portney had officially admitted many times that DT is a melting pot of all their influences from the rock world. They don't denied that some parts of their music isn't that originalm, but tributes to their heroes. Something, that can be annoying but something very satisfying it all depend of listeners interest. I think Scene is a masterpiece and true original ( believe athey haven't surpass that yet.), but they got alot other stuff that is too Metallica, but better than Metallica of course.
