What does everyone think of technical death metal bands such as Atheist, Cynic, Between the Buried and Me, later Death, and, despite being unrecognized by PA, Pestilence, Cephalic Carnage, and Phantasmagory?

I think this mini-genre is among the coolest in existence. Something about fusing genres like free-jazz and good old fashioned prog rock with death metal brings a smile to my face.

And don't mention Opeth, they're a completely different animal Wink

technical death metal and jazz-metal fusion is incredible...but i have a slightly different list.
the classic three, Death, Athiest, and Cynic, are of course good  (but Cynic is the best, once you get used to the robotic vocal backing) but they get boring, i think. Death especially, since thier later stuff sounds so much like At The Gates, but without the ATG succinctness.
for my money, you have got to put Meshuggah up there, absolutely incredible, then genre-benders Ephel Duath (Italian Avant-Garde Jazz/Black-Metal fusion), and also a good dose of Unexpect (unclassifiable avant every-metal-you-can-imagine band)

also, less thechnical/extreme/jazzy, both Gojira and Aghora are just awesome

(haha, sorry, i think i pulled apart your rather clear-cut genre and added a bunch of wierd stuff)

see, i just have a hard time with bands called "necrophagist" (especially since half the people i know that like them don't know what the term means), "cephalic carnage" (...again...), "Phantasmagory", etc.

Wonderful stuff, deathmetal is one of my favorite non-prog genres actually, and the prog influences make it even more interesting.

I'd like to mention Cryptopsy, masterful tech-death(even if not prog) with an absolutely kickass drummer.

I love progressive death, but people need to look beyond the standard Atheist,Death and Cynic recommendations and start investigating some killer newer bands in this amazing genre like:Ion Dissonance,Theory in Practice,Illogicist,Becoming the Archetype,Coprofago,Martyr,In-Quest,Anata,Psyopus,Gojira,,Sikth,Between the Buried and Me,Quo Vadis and Psycroptic,to name but a few.

Some of the instrumental acts in this genre like Behold...the Arctopus,Sleep Terror,Dysrhythmia and Continuo Renacer are amazing too.

I really like At the Gates, and while I sorta see the comparison, I'll never get tired of the Big Three. Smile

As to silly band names, I don't give a damn what you call your band if I dig your music. Who's gonna argue that naming your band for the inventor of the mechanical reaper is a good idea? Wink

And does anyone like the Red Chord? They're more of a tech-death/hardcore fusion, but I think Clients was probably among the top three or so albums of 2005 (even though the new one is disappointing)

I didn't like ATG that much...they recycled their material a lot.
I've heard Red Chord also...good band.

And Edge of Sanity
Gorguts anyone?

Ah I forgot them! Crimson and Obscura are both amazing albums!

Anyone heard Rune? They're a defunct band from Dayton that released two full-lengths and a split, kind of a Gorguts-meets-My Dying Bride sound, really good sh*t.

Jody, would you liken any of these bands to Psycroptic? I remember the first time I saw them, they absolutely blew me away. Their old vocalist was amazing, he could alternate between high pitched screams to guttural belches to sounding peculiarly like a pig at the drop of a hat. One of the best things to come out of Tasmania.

Yes, yes, yes, their Obscura ('98) album is a stone cold classic.

All the ones I listed are similar to Psycroptic.
