Just wondering what people think of this brilliant, Norwegian black metal band.
They tended to have progressive tendencies in their last album too.
I think they're amazing, what about you?Smile

The best Norwegian Black Metal Band ever - started getting all symphonic and progressive on their 2nd album, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.
What?

I only have In The Nightside Eclipse, but it's the most accomplished Black Metal I've heard. Great stuff.

Don't play it a lot these days but Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is a classic.

Indeed, if you like 'Anthems' and your a prog fan, you might like the later two albums even better, especially 'Prometheus'.
Progressive black metal basically.

Though I haven't heard any Emperor, I am in no way a fan of Black metal. In fact, I dislike most metal. However, I very much enjoy Ihsahn's side projects - notably Peccatum. Lost in a Reverie is fantastic.

Wonderful band, but Burzum is muuuuch better in my book Nightide Eclipse is the only one I gave so far, it's very good and I'll check out later albums(I heard they're quite different) but overall I prefer the more atmospheric side of BM.

I only have Anthems, I should check out more of their stuff.

Peccatum were excellent too, and I should try to find Ihsahn's solo album.

Prometheus alone should gain them entry as prog-related. Great band.

Definitely. It's extremely layered, and really quite technical. As for any side-projects, I haven't heard them, although I do want to try Thou shalt suffer or something like that.

As for Burzum, psssh their last two albums were terribleLOL
But indeed, the rest are pure gold.Smile

Tricky. Prog Related is a poor fit as it is a sprawlling mess of a sub-genre - no other band in there comes close to what Emperor produced and their progressive-related achievments in the Metal scene are equalled only by Iron Maiden. (Craddle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are influenced equally by Iron Maiden and Emperor, but neither are progressive as such)

Ihsahn and Peccatum are dumped in Progressive Metal (square pegs in round holes IMO) and even though Emperor are both Metal and Progressive and probably should be there by association (Arcturus, Borknagar, Ephel Duath, Sigh etc.), I would never call them Progressive Metal, having none of the qualities that define that sub-genre (include them and wait for the "Emperor vs. DT" polls Wink).

They are Progressive Black Metal and are by that vertue alone more closely allied with Ulver eventhough they never left the confines of the Black Metal genre to enter into Experimental/Post-Rock.

Okay, next: Mortiis...
What?

It's excellent as far as metal albums go...but I haven't grasped metal, and it's really not my thing. There some delicate/melancholic moments that fit my liking, though.

One of those bands that belong in any serious metal collection.
