I've just added a feedback at Sid Smith's Yellow Room blog, to his review of (yet another) Jefferson Airplane live album. It stuck me whilst bringing my thoughts together that one of the Airplane tracks that stick out in the mind, is an advert used as the tailpiece of their compilation 2400 Fulton Street, where Slick etal sing the praises of Levi's white jeans.:
Then I realised novelty tracks, especially ads, can often be more memorable than the band's real music. For instance the Electric Prunes praising Vox's Wah Wah pedal:
Or John ('Prog is bollocks, complete bollocks') Peel advertising Nice's latest LP:
And then of course Townshend & Co endorsement of baked beans (I presume Townshend/Moon's music was used by Heinz for their TV adverts for years afterwards???)and deodorant etc on The Who Sell Out:
So any other rock musical endorsements out there that I should catch? |

XTC's Andy Partridge has released a series of demos/unreleased tracks called "Fuzzy Warbles" (10 discs in all); several of them have little jingles advertising brands of guitars, favorite DJ's, etc. Like "The Who Sell Out", they're very British and humorous.

Neil Young was certainly against the whole idea, as evidenced in the lyrics of "This note's for you".
"Ain't singin' for pepsi
Ain't singin' for coke I don't sing for nobody Makes me look like a joke This note's for you. Ain't singin' for miller Don't sing for bud I won't sing for politicians Ain't singin' for spuds
This note's for you." Edited by Easy Livin - August 15 2007 at 03:36 |

Have to remember the examples I cite, got paid for the various promotions. The Who appeared to both be big fans of BIg L or pirate radio station Radio London ( and vice versa), and contributed advertising materials - some of which is played on The Who Sell Out. Wasn't Radio London the only British radio station to post the Who's I Can See For Miles single as No.1 in their chart, whilst everybody else had the disc no higher than No.2.? I think at the time Townshend said if the disc didn't get to No.1 in the Uk they would work abroad, which they then effective did!
