Topic: ABOUT "A TRICK OF THE TAIL" Posted: March 06 2005 at 14:25 |
Hi Everybody,
A Genesis album I love too much is "A TRICK OF THE TAIL"
I'm new here in the Forum and I don't know if this subject was discussed here, so...
I think this record is so sensational as his 5 predecessors, with magnificant songs, epic lyrics, and superb arrangements made by four of the best musicians ever played together.
I keep myself thinking if it will be so good if Peter Gabriel (my favourite all time vocalist) had been a part of it.
What do you think about it ?
And one more time, sorry my bad english, but I'm sure you will understand the topic...
Best Greetings...

One of my all time favourite albums.Sometimes the best album a band makes is the one when they are in transition. It's proggy and accessible at the same time with a more 'open' commercial approach but the depth is still retained in the songs. There's not really a bad track although sometimes people cite 'Robbery,Assault and Battery' but I like that one personally.

Ripples is probably the best of Phil Collins era songs.

Hi,
I'm not a Phil Collins "with his mouth open" fan too. Just drumming! But it's really a great album. I love all the songs.
"Mad, Man Moon" mainly.
Best Greetings

A Trick Of The Tail is the most consistent Genesis album for me - they never hit the heights of inspiration that they reached with Gabriel, but there really isn't a bad song on it - even the token 'comedy' number, Robbery, Assaualt and Battery, doesn't start to grate after repeated listens, unlike Get 'em Out by Friday or The battle of Epping Forest. I also saw the TOTT tour, which was my first prog gig (Stafford Bingley Hall, 1976), so the album has special significance for me.

The only Collins era Genesis that ties a Gabriel Genesis era album for
me. It ties Trespass, as my least favorite Gabriel Genesis album, witht
he exception of from Genesis to Revelation. Stil though, it's nothing
compared to Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Live, Selling England by the Pound,
or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
Robbery Assault and Battery weakens it though (thanks Phil), but it's still damn good.
PS- your English is better than that of most Americans.

It's an interesting point though Ja Ja. Could they have made such an album with Gabriel still in the fold? "The lamb..." seems to indicate that Gabriel's inflence was getting stronger with each album, so I suspect their change of style may have come sooner had he stayed.
I think even by that time he was starting to turn his back on prog, and look for new areas to explore.

At the moment its my second favourite genesis album. I actually dont think it would have been as good with gabriel. Less room for tony banks to excorsive his creative talent. Ithink ill play it after a wizrd/truestar is finished...

This was the album that showed the world that there was still Genesis life after Gabriel: well, Collins was more than eager to display his jazz leanings, Banks was specially inspired in his writing and performing, and Hackett was also enjoying some more space for his soloing and textures to come forward, while Rutherford continued to do some more progress in his achievement of musical maturity. His composition 'Ripples' (with some additional stuff rpovided by Banks) is one of the most beautiful Genesis pieces ever, and sure Hackett knows how to enhance its appeal with his soloing from the instrumental interlude onwards. IMHO, the only 5-star Genesis album sans-Gabriel.
Great stuff. The following album 'Wind & Wuthering' is almost as good (4 1/2 stars), and even gave room for some of the most amazing Hackett inputs for Genesis - 'Blood on the Rooftops' is my fave Hackett-era Genesis tune.
But soon fater... then there were three, and we all know what happened afterwards.
Regards.

I always seen this album closer to Selling England by the Pound than to anything Genesis ever did, too soft and friendly for my taste in comparisson with the dark atmospheric early releases.
From the Collins/Hackett era I stay with Wind & Wuthering, much more closer to the aerly stuff (Except for the cheesie Your Own Special Way).
And my all time Genesis albums are NC, Foxtrot & Trespass. Even when it's a very good album, but by far my least favorite Genesis release (From the ones I care of course, and that's only until W&W).

Jaja:
I have always loved, admired and respected TOTT. However, I actually prefer Wind & Wuthering, which I think is even "deeper," and more "compelling"; the "sound" on TOTT is "lighter," more playful. And that's great and appropriate, given the general "playfulness" of the material. However, I prefer the slightly "darker" tone of W&W, which sends chills up my spine in many places, including Eleventh Earl, One for the Vine (without question the greatest post-Gabriel Genesis composition), and especially Blood on the Rooftops. Even the arrangements and sounds of the oft-maligned Wot Gorilla and Unquiet Slumbers are far more intense than most people give them credit for. And what can one say about Afterglow? It is simply the most majestic, heart-wrenching, tear-jerking Genesis tune since at least Can Utility.
But, then, that's just my opinion...
Peace.

Hi Guys.
I forget to say that the albun's art sleeve (very, very beautiful), makes me think in Lewis Carrol stories books (as "Selling Engand" did too).
I think that this Album is miles away better then "Wind and Wuthering" but in this last one has the best song of both albuns: "One for th Vine".
Best Greetings...

I agree about the cover art Ja Ja, looks as early 1900's engravings by Daumiere, simply awesome.
But it's better if you got the old LP format, protecting the album there was a paper bag that had the same drawings from a different perspective, the squonk was captured, the old lady's image in the mirror was no longer the young and pretty woman, the children were kind of bored, almost as if the magic was gone.
Very poetic, something we lost when the CD was invented.

I reckon its better than its predecessor but not as good as the next
one. Then again i've never been a big fan of The Lamb... and Wind And
Wuthering was my first ever buy so i'm probably biased.

Second best Genesis album after SEBTP, ten out of ten. Mad Man Moon is
my all-time favourite song, not just by Genesis but by any artist. And
Ripples and Entangled are excellent as well. Although Peter Gabriel is
the best, I'm not sure whether he would have made the album even
better. Say what you will about Phil (and I've said a lot myself), but
in this album his vocals are excellent.
