If you want something a little more challenging and uncommerical then
Gentle Giant is the place to begin. I recommend Free Hand, but Octopus
and In a Glass House are also reasonable starting points.

Have a look at the top albums on the home page, and try a few of the MP3s for those bands. That should point you in the right direction! |

Camel have a unique sound - it's quite hard to compare them with anyone, but let's just say that the vocals make the groups' name quite apt... Seriously, Camel are at the more accessible end of prog, and tend to concentrate on fantastic melodies more than out-there avant-gardeness. On the surface, they have a kind of AOR rock sound, but beneath that, there are superb, hooky riffs that change with no or little warning which give their music an incredibly improvised feel. The icing on the cake (which is a very good cake, made up of solid yet sensitive drums and bass, punchy rhythm guitar and driving keyboards) is Andy Latimer's amazing melodic guitar solos - after hearing AL, nearly everyone else starts to sound like they're just bluffing and being technical for the sake of it (with the obvious exceptions of Dave Gilmour and Steve Rothery). As if that's not enough, you also get the rich marzipan of Pete Bardens' organ... or should I rephrase that ... The interplay between Bardens and Latimer on Camel's early albums is just amazing - you can hear the two of them firing each other off, creating amazing combined textures and "conversations". And, because this is a professionally iced cake and I want to spin this metaphor out as long as I think I can get away with it, you get Andy Latimer's excellent flute playing. I doubt he ever made Ian Anderson think about jacking it in, but it's a bonus texture in Mirage onwards. Mirage is an absolute masterpiece of prog rock, and recommended listening (see my review ). The Snow Goose goes one further, and enlists further musical textures, including a bassoon and an oboe to create a quasi-classical texture. The live version (of the entire Snow Goose album) on A Live Record features a full orchestra. Snow Goose and A Live Record are also highly recommended
