La Pura Realidad - s/t
I don't even remember how I came across this album, but now that I see it's listen in PA, there's no reason why I shouldn't make a thread about it.
It's a 2007 album by Mexican band La Pura Realidad and I'll let Andu's biography tell the story:
LA PURA REALIDAD is a major band of the current Mexican progressive scene, and holds a special significance as a key intersection for multiple traits and references such as:
- a local Mexican progressive tradition, whose ideas, musical themes and sounds are being incorporated and matured into a fully developed new and at the same time old product, establishing bridges of continuity for something which therefore might be called a school - a similar relation to a broader Latin American tradition of progressive rock with heavy and aggressive sounds, eclectic tastes and influences, and common foundations set in King Crimson interpretation, a regional school which spans through Argentina, Chile and Mexico, from the 70s and founding fathers BUBU (Arg) to current day CABEZAS DE CERA (Mex) or MAR DE ROBLES (Chi) - the Latin American traditional music and culture, whose integration into the LA PURA REALIDAD’s music is both a return to cultural roots and also a continuation of the classic 70s “andean” prog from Chile and Peru LA PURA REALIDAD was formed around 2001 by the experienced bassist Manuel Lhoman (ex-DELIRIUM, ex-HIGH FIDELITY); other members are the excellent musicians guitarist Mauricio Terrón, Adolfo Zaragoza on guitar and jarana, drummer Jorge Alanis and violinist Hanna Hipakka. The music is enriched with collaborations from other prominent musicians, notably violinist Alfredo Flores (ex-DELIRIUM, ex-QUESO SAGRADO, ex-HIGH FIDELITY ORCHESTRA).Establishing itself was not easy for the band, hence the band name and concept: “The Truthful Reality”. Their materials were self produced, and the debut, selft-titled album from 2007, was released through the band’s efforts. The music consists of instrumental songs, defined by successive lead parts from violin and electric guitar, which are to be found in constant dialogue, one keeping a groovy rhythm while the other draws the lead in a spacey but aggressive manner; the saxophone sometimes takes the place of the violin. The excellent rhythm section consists of competent bass playing, the superb drumming in “waves”, and background folk musical patterns played on traditional instruments. The musical narration is a rigorous succession of exposition-aggression-relief-exultation-coda, with a typical Latin-American feel of intensity and joy, discernable through the many influences ranging from King Crimson constructions, jazzy interludes, folk tunes and typical Mexican traditions such as son jarocho, danzón and canto nuevo. LA PURA REALIDAD is recommended to fans of intense combinations of electric and traditional ways in rock. Thanks to Guigo (Atkingani) and Guillermo (memowakeman) for providing materials and translations. :::Biography written by Andu, Collaborator & Symphonic Specialist::: Very good album, it's one I enjoy more with each listen and I urge people to discover the great music coming from Mexico.

They were added by the Eclectic team, of which I am part... We are very proud to have been able to add a new band from a country that has so much to offer in therms of music, but unfortunately doesn't enjoy a lot of exposure as regards their prog output.

A new review:
LA PURA REALIDAD — La Pura Realidad
Review by Ricochet ("Philip Desmond Halloway") Special Collaborator Electronic Prog & Art Rock Specialist La Pura Realidad is a new ensemble from Mexico - and from Mexic's/Latin American brave "history" and "cycle" of prog rock - playing with a complex vein, with an absurd (at first) perfection and with a hardly easy instrumental pure mechanic. The band's first album can be a hit for many, a special album for some, and in rest a good, steely work. Posted Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 15:55 EST |

Regarding La Pura Realidad, I must uncover the fact that a very important PA collab, head of a sub-genre team, has recently accused me of preferring the music of the bands I promote
. What's the penalty for such a crime here, Assaf? I'm asking as I guess you're the usual suspect around

You go ahead, Ruben!
Myself I'll write them at some point. Their email is [email protected] ; I need to ask them to look over their PA entry for errors & omissions. Edited by andu - November 13 2007 at 18:35 |

Thanks for the add, Assaf!
Andu, I suggest you don't take it seriously, it must have been a very trivial talk you had with that person. But, out of interest, what was the context: a top 5 discussion where you've place a lot of the bands you've promoted on PA? |

Well, bump
Here is my contribution
La Pura Realidad
La Pura Realidad Eclectic Prog Review by memowakeman Another excellent Mexican band!
Yes it is, and what a pleasure to at last review this self-titled album by La Pura Realidad, which is a new band formed by talented musicians that have dedicated their life to music, playing in different bands, and her they approached an excellent sound, created by superb compositions. This album features 6 great songs and a total time of 45 minutes approximately, kicking off with "Roja Ciudad" which is a beautiful song to my ears, starting with a delicate violin sound, instrument which is very important in this album, since it leads several passages of the same. After a minute the song turns different, with a faster time and with the entrance of several instruments, the obvious ones such as drums, bass and nice guitar riffs, along with saxophone and the same violin, the sound now is more experimental, don't know if using the term of avant-garde may fit here, but is the first I thought. The structure and texture of the song is formidable, passionate and joyful in moments, very nice song. The next track is "Sonando", a 10-minute epic which gathers all the elements the band offer to the listener, starts with a dark atmosphere created by violins, which little by little opens the door to the entrance of the other instruments. The song is progressing and just before minute 3 it explodes with a heavier drumming sound and again being the violin the one that leads and predominates the most, though there is always the guitar sound making some riffs and adding a special sound to the song. Up to minute 5, it stops and starts again with acoustic guitar reminding me to some folkloric and typical Mexican sound, so I love the way they make experimental music but without forgetting their roots, so that mix is exquisite. This is an excellent track, one of their finest moments. Following we have "La Realidad", again starting with violin sound and seconds after the other instruments incorporate to the track, while we listen to a soft violin sound, there is the electric guitar making some excellent riffs in a lower volume in order not to sound that jammed. The song makes several short stops and rebuilds the structure, using both, their previous and new notes, there is a time, in the strong part of the song where it sounds bluesy just before stopping again, and return to the first song's structure, cool. "Alegría" as the name suggests, is a joyful song which starts with drums and acoustic guitar, then electric guitar riffs appear and the violin starts creating a beautiful atmosphere while you create some images, well the ambient created is extraordinary and it puts a smile on my face, one of my favourite songs. "Maria" is another great song that combines experimental music with folkish and typical Mexican tunes, again the violin sound takes your attention and along with constant drumming and fast acoustic guitar chords create a delicious atmosphere. Then the music turns into a relaxation time and elaborate some experimental passages, here the work of acoustic guitar is very helpful. Minutes later the song changes again but this time making a powerful and intrepid sound. The album ends with "De Noche" which starts with some percussion sound reminding me to a classic Mexican song from the 80s named Kumbala, the mood is like a ballad and invites you to take your couple and dance softly together, it may be like a love song, but some minutes later it changes a little but just in order to return to the main theme, excellent closing song. This album is very interesting and I like it a lot, because it shows typical Mexican elements along with some experimental ones, which makes it a versatile and complete album which I would recommend to anyone, not a masterpiece, but in my opinion a 4 star album. Enjoy it! |

When I first started visiting this site, I didn't really expect to find prog sung in spanish, my native language, now I'm glad to find every 2 or 3 days a review of a latin american or spanish band (at least it's been so for the last or last 2 weeks). However, I can't say I've had the luck to hear any of these bands I've read reviews about, I guess I'll have to start searching for their albums. The only albums I've gotten in spanish because I found them here are the first 3 Triana albums, and I have really enjoyed them (specially the first 2). I had never really liked the music I'd heard in spanish, except for a few por-rock bands I found rather good (before I got into prog), and at last now I think I understand why I didn't like music in spanish: because I'd never heard Triana or any other of these bands before. Whichever band/album in spanish would anyone here recommend me to get now? Would La Pura Realidad be a good next step? By the way, if it's still useful, I could translate the spanish bio you needed help with in the other thread about this band.

I think this would be a good next step for you and you won't have problems with vocals in spanish because the album is completely instrumental
Unfortunately they have been in some dead point because of personal issues and the lack of places to play this sort of music. |

Like Rosenbach said, La Pura Realidad is instrumental, but I've opened many threads before and several were for bands singing in Spanish; one was AMAGRAMA and their album Ciclotima. Very good album with a nice mix between instrumentals and sung tracks. |
