Both good bands, but I sm not obsessed with any. I like more songs/albums by Radiohead, so they get my vote.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I enjoy Radiohead from time to time, but they don't give me the goosebumps that Tool do.

Amnesiac really is that good. overhyped or not, Radiohead struck gold there. I'll vote for them.

Tool for me.
They'll stand the test of time because of their original drumming and unique guitar style, Radiohead is good but to contempory not unique enough.

Can't trust the Last.fm majority! There are more plays of Dream Theater than Zappa

I agree. I got into Aenema, but couldn't stand Lateralus and never got 10,000 Days because it was compared so much to Lateralus. Besides, Radiohead is the greatest band of last 10 years: OK Computer till now. (Of course, I'm sure everyone totally agrees, except maybe for Tool fans. )

Tool. I love them.
Radiohead is not prog, they are alternative rock, and, as I recall, a couple of the members have stated that they hate the progressive rock label that is put on them, denying that they are prog, and I also believe that Jonny Greenwood has said that he dislikes progressive rock.

I think it's hallarious that Radiohead actually hates being labeled as possibly a progressive rock back, or with progressive tendencies, by some people. How is that an insult? I don't think it's a secret that the level of skill in basically every aspect of music is higher in progressive rock than really any other genre in music...except maybe classical orchestra music. Anyway they are so popular, and the mainstream love them so much, why would they be mad if some prog lovers want to listen to their stuff and call it 'prog' too. I can see why they might say they dislike progressive rock, but please, to actually be upset because someone called them that is absurd.
...and don't get me started about Porcupine Tree trying to deny their progginess...oh man, if they weren't prog they'd probably lose over 60% of their fanbase. The day THEY deny they are prog, is the day their career ends. |
Radiohead is in that unique position where a lot of artsy/indie people love them and a lot of people into prog love them. Stereotypically, artsy people don't like Prog because it tries too hard and can be too cold and calculated, and people who like prog usually think anything that's close to minimalistic isn't interesting ("there's no keyboardist" "there's no song longer than 5 minutes," "the lyrics are too common," etc). I find myself in a similar situation as far as tastes go. A lot of die hard fans on either end of the spectrum probably find it hard to believe that I like both types of music equally. It's unfair, but labels usually imply pre-concieved notions, and no one wants to be stereotyped.
