HI PROG FRIENDS, THIS IS CÉSAR INCA.

KOIAK is an excellent band from Chile. They do an exciting kind of prog-fusion, somewhere between Mar de Robles, Akinetón Retard and Ergo Sum. Their combination of heavy prog, jazz-rock, Crimsonian psychedelia and colors from Chilean coast folk is fluidly ordained in a prog-folk frame. Their namesake debut album, relased in 2005, is really awesome: a concept-disc with a cosmic-psychological theme.

Sound samples – 3 songs to download:

Here’s a Spanish-language review, plus a cover image for their album: http://www.manticornio.com/rock-progresivo/K/KOIAK/koiak-album.html

They deserve a place here in the Archives, I honestly relieve so.

      Kind regards.

I am going to listen to them as soon as I can, and post the link in the HP thread.

The three tracks on their website are very good indeed.. It's not easy to judge on the basis of only three tracks, but what I've heard points to either Eclectic or HP.

Then the two teams will, once again, treat this band for its best place. Wink

The guitar parts are really prominent, but I think that the fusion factor is the essential one: regardless of the fact that the hrythm section is tight (or not) and the guitar riffs and leads are loud (or not), the fusion-prog essence seems to me as the real deal. Just like Mar de Robles, whose style is essentially prog-folk despíte the notable aggressiveness of the guitar input.

Anyway, it's good to see that this band is instantly noticed in the Archives. If you make me choose between eclectic and HP, I'd rather go for the former, eclectic.

     Kind regards.

I remembered last night that the band are already on the JR/F band admission list. However, I think they would fit Eclectic best, because of the heavier overtones of their music, as well as the interesting folk influences. I suppose we can decide for Eclectic, though I'd like David to listen to their stuff as well.

Not easy indeed to decide whether Heavy or Eclectic out of three samples, especially because the second one, Sifilis, is the only best one to judge: heavy music, folk ornaments, pinching rhythms and a bit of "modern prog" impression.

Reading, however, the review, I think Koiak is generally regarded as a band that fits more than a place i.e. more than Heavy Prog. The usual links to "jazz instrumentality" and "prog fusion" aren't truly amazing in comparison with what you hear for yourself, but, altogether, Koiak can be trusted for making heavy modern prog with elements and the fusion that is properly for Eclectic.

This being said, if Raff/Logan/David/whoever else managed to listen to their music agree on Eclectic, I can very well agree myself.

I can't, since I'm not a member of the Ecclectic Prog team. But I can provide data if you will...

You are a Special Collaborator, Cesar, you can add bands, the Teams just give you the Ok. Tongue

If fact, if neither micky, Raff, David or Logan have the time to do an addition for this band, I would appreciate if you'd do the addition, Cesar.Clap
