This was inspired by the post made earlier about chicks and prog... basically i have a friend (yes a she) that has started showing interest in music with prog influences such as radiohead, battles, muse , the decemberists, basically shes really into indie music... so i figured why not make her a mix that somehow connects the two genres together... I figured i would ease it in by giving her things shes familiar with and then introducing some of the older prog acts ...here is the list i came up with ... just wondering if anybody had any other suggestions before i present this to her... by t he way it was really hard to get this all to fit in one disk ...
Muse-Take a Bow New Trolls - Allegro 65DaysofStatic- Climbing on Roofs Emerson Lake and Palmer - Knife Edge Bell Orchestre - Throw it on a Fire Mars Volta - Aberinkula Frank Zappa - Cletus-Awretus Awrightus Maudlin of The Well - Sleeping is a Curse Red Sparrows - We Stood Transfixed... Radiohead- Morningbell Yes- Long Distance Turnaround Porcupine Tree- Sentimental Genesis - Can-Utility and the Coastliners Mercury Program - Gently Turned on your Head King Crimson- 21st Century Schizoid Man |

Just be careful, you don't want to scare her away. I started a thread just a about 30 minutes ago. Try The Dear Hunter out with her. Has a mix of The Mars Volta and Panic At the Disco. She should hopefully gain much interest in these guys.

fingers crossed for you. My girlfriend has been exposed to my entire library and she still hasn't come around. She does, however, like some of the bands that your friend seems to like, and also likes stuff like PT, TMV and whatnot. Anyways, either she will or she won't... but don't be too forceful now!
(not saying that girls don't like prog, just that some /people/ will never be able to get into it.) Seems like a good compilation, even if I havent heard of some of the bands. |

You'd think so, but you'd be surprised.

You might not be seeing the whole picture. Perhaps this girl is showing interest in prog because you are so interested in prog. Do girls do this sort of thing? Sometimes, but they usually to so to get the attention of a guy who was oblivious to her previous feminine charms. Reevaluate.

I invite the girl over for dinner and put on the Ikon by Utopia. If the woman can handle 30 minutes of musical bliss at one time then she is a keeper. Most people run after 15 minutes. Remember....bros before hos!a

I've posted this elsewhere, but I forget where it went.
Recently I created a playlist on Imeem to introduce good music (i.e. prog) to a friend who was unfamiliar with it.
Here is what I came up with.
1. Spectral Mornings -- Steve Hackett
2. Starship Trooper -- Yes
3. Squonk -- Genesis
4. The Last Seven Minutes -- Magma
5. Order of the Universe -- Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, Howe
6. Matte Kudasai -- King Crimson
7. Subdivisions -- Rush
8. Lady Fantasy -- Camel
9. Anne Boleyn -- Rick Wakeman
10. Kayleigh -- Marillion
I have since created three more playlists. If you are interested, they ought to be available at http://profile.imeem.com/Hfl_wxD/playlists/
They are all named The Education of a Young Yahtzee.

I recommend showing her some post-rock and math rock. They are both identified with indie.

Ehh . . . I hate to be picky here, but . . . it's ''Long Distance Runaround''. Do let's make sure we are familiar with the genre ourselves before we start suggesting it to others, shall we? (I kid, I kiiiiid! )
Erm . . . I don't really deal with many girls (too many mindgames) or indie fans (too many deathcab for cuties) for that matter, but I would suggest that if she only likes modern music now, she won't like the older stuff. Prog isn't really mix tape material in the first place, man. You're gonna give her the wrong impression of it. If you must, make sure it is the modern stuff, and nothing too long or complex, it may scare her away. Indie music isn't exactly known for it's intelligent songwriting, so nothing too deep at first. The Porcupine Tree stuff is good, you should include more bands of this era, I think.
Just my opinion, you know her better than any of us do, so ultimately it will be up to you on what to do. Edited by p0mt3 - February 17 2008 at 01:41 |

Opeth--Damnation
Coheed and Cambria--The Good Apollo discs
Chroma Key--Dead Air for Radios
Three- The End is Begun and Wake Pig
Pineapple Thief--I like most of their stuff but their lastest What We Have Sown is ,imho, their best. Edited by Darklord55 - February 17 2008 at 07:29 |

Thanks for all the comments ...and sorry for the "long distance TURNaround" i was typing fast my bad
i forgot to mention that one of the big reasons i decided to do this was because i found some frank zappa on her computer ....which was defintly a surprise ... but anways well see how this turns out ...worst case scenerio she throws it away and never learns of the pleasures of prog. ... owell if she does like it though i might show her some of those lists that ghost_of_morphy has up on imeem they are preety good ,thanks |

er...show girls prog? unfortunately, I've tried it some times, and in a bunch of 6 women, only one has liked something of what'ive shown, and I allways had in mind they're musical tastes. For example, one was a metal fan, and didnt knew Riverside, Opeth, or even Sleepytime Gorilla Museum!!!!!!!!! (what a metal fan) and I even don't consider myself a metal fan...she only knew DreamTheather and Tool, but she liked Sleepytime and Opeth (but didn't dig TMV or Yes, showed Close to the Edge, big mistake, never gonna do it again). In another case, I made a girl who didn't even knew that prog existed, and showed her TMV. At first with songs like Tetragrammaton and others more "agressive and psychedelic of theirs, she wasn't turn on, so I showed her the song, Asilos Magdalena and she loved it! And now I've showed her their last album, and she, now, likes TheMarsVolta!!!!! well at least their sound is modern with prog and everyone young(my age) can like them.
Either way, i dont think indie fans don't like that much prog, cause I have a indie friend who listens with me to Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, and other 70 groups and she likes it, she likes the lyrics because they're normally very intelligent and deep, and she recognizes that the prog sound and music, is more interesting and more worked, but she doesnt stop being a indie fan. well at least she didnt bash prog, and listened to entire songs like Man-Erg, Battle of Epping Forest or A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers. ah, one more thing, luckily, she was the one who wanted me to show her prog. Wich in my opinion, is the only way to someone really liking, in a near future, prog. Because if its you who want to look for new music, its easier than to being me, showing someone else music, normally, this way around, doesnt work (but it isnt any scientifical method) |

Well, not to be just contrarian here... My wife does not care much for prog, nor for much rock for that matter. Her tastes run to MOR. This is why I always have a top-o-the-line set of headphones, replaced every couple of years. That being said, I've found her music has much to educate me. Just one example: She likes Bette Midler. Now that you've dismissed me as some kind of idiot, did you realize that Bette's Bette of Roses album has Buzz Feiten on guitar on most of the cuts? You do know Buzz Feiten, eh? He's the dude who replaced Elvin Bishop when Elvin left the Butterfield Blues Band. And damn, he's still a pretty good guitar player. (BTW, my wife would have no clue on this connection.) Point is, it works both ways. |

I would give her a marihuana dosis and then put on her Cd player Piper at the Gates of Dawn alongside Shine on you Crazy Diamond, Careful with that Axe, Eugene. When she starts to get happy their I would put Gates of Delirium after that Close to the Edge. (getting happier) Entire album Lizard. (really happy) Supper's Ready ( gets dizzy) Thick as a Brick part 1 ( calms down) Speed King lol. Hope you liked the list but the most important thing is the marihuana if not there's no use
