Topic: Ultimate Prog Tournament 4-1: Yes v. Genesis Posted: March 11 2008 at 21:57 |
Well, here we are at the semifinals!! This shall be very interesting. I absolutely love both bands and what I choose depends completely on my mood... but lately I'd very slightly give the edge to Yes.

O boy - the warheads are gonna fly on this one. Yes and Genesis fans are notoriously diehard - I'm one of the former (Even though I just finished listening to Foxtrot ![LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) )

Both of these bands had 'Golden Periods' and not much after that. I'm just saying Genesis had a golden period considered by prog fans, I found much of their material to be boring. From the Yes Album to Relayer...Yes was unstoppable.

Both bands are incredible, and both produced some of the biggest masterpieces of prog. Both are highly original, and both bands have crappy material... so far it would seem to be a close competition.
The reason why Yes wins (actually, no contest): their greatest works greatly surpasses that of Genesis. CTTE, And You And I, Heart Of The Sunrise, TGOD and Awaken are all better than anything Genesis ever did. Furthermore Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and Squire all beat their counterparts from Genesis.
Yes to the top!

Went with Yes. Great first half of their creative output and they never went the route that Philesis did.

It's a bit unfair vote, because I own the whole Yes catalogue and am just only getting into Genesis on a bigger scale. But well, I've heard at least half of the "essential Genesis masterpieces" and I know I haven't been as impressed as with Yes. Genesis made better pop hits, though. But well, Yes it is. Maybe next year it's the other way round, who knows.

Yes all the way. As I have stated time and again on these forums, I have never been a big Genesis fan, though of course I recognise their importance and influentiality.

Too difficult to decide. I flipped a coin.
It seems to me that yes may have the edge from a pure musical standpoint, but I think genesis has alot more character due to PG. While Jon Anderson has a great voice and does his part as an equal member of the band, Peter Gabriel gives a performance with every vocal and his lyrics connect more with the listener (VS the sometimes nonsensical lyrics of Jon Anderson).
That the main difference I see in these bands, but anyways... I love them both.

Yes wins 1970-1974 period
Genesis wins 1976-1981 period
Genesis wins overall. But I rate Tull, Gentle Giant and Camel as better bands

Love Jon Anderson voice, annoyed by Gabriel and Collins singing, so YES wins!!
