Much as I like Caravan, definitely Soft Machine. Fantastic band, and what terrific musicians were involved with it.

Soft Machine .... awesome. personal faves are third and six but pye hastings is pye hastings and no other band quite hits the golf girl, grubby little oik, for richard thing for me,
caravan win not by a neck (it's cheltenham week after all) but by a sense of humour |

Pffff! both are great but Soft wins because I saw their "hard" 1974 concert with Holdsworth that I still can get out of my mind!

Hard to choose - two bands with a completely different sound, which really shows you the variety of music contained in the Canterbury genre.
I would prefer Soft Machine myself - I think "Third" is a better album than the two Caravan albums I have. But I was listening to In the Land of Gray and Pink the other day, and Caravan is just so much damn fun - the music puts a smile on your face! |

While they're both awesome and I prefer Gong to both, I have to go with Soft Machine on this one. Robert Wyatt's solo material is quite good also.

I love them both, but in the end I had to choose Soft Machine, particularly for "Third".

Caravan is a great band! In terms of albums, I think Soft Machine has the most consistency. Pretty much all of their albums are excellent, even Seven!

different bands really. too hard to compare. caravan were a better pop group that the softs were, but soft machines music was far more ground braking than caravan. caravan werent an experimental band.
personally i think hatfield made the perfect balance of pop and experimental music, so they would be my favorite band from the so-called 'canterbury scene'
