Topic: Minstrel Play Posted: March 21 2008 at 04:11 |
Because I've done Play/Warchild, and EVERYONE'S done Play/Thick, I thought I'd shake it up a bit.
Minstrel, as well all know, has that damn "Baker Street Mews" thing in the middle that's somewhat Passionate in its design (if not execution).
Plus, there's that whole every song-from-"Black Satin Dancer"-to-"Grace"-forms-a-single-unit thing know as the Minstrel in the Gallery Suite. Perhaps you've heard of it. It's quite amazing really.
Anyways, in case you haven't been paying attention to what I've been paying attention to, then you'll be surprised to learn that Minstrel is my favorite. For one thing, I can remember more of the album. For another thing, I prefer the standard Tull sound stripped down to the "let's all sound like ELP and Yes had a baybay" sound on Play.
Oh, and, fun fact; Minstrel is somewhat resonant. And deeply depressing. Play, although fun, has no real application to my everday life. As much as I'd like to traverse hell and meet Satan on a regular basis, it just don't happen.

Both A PASSION PLAY and WARCHILD are very dear to me (Honi soit qui mal y pense!) and I remember when MINSTREL first came out I was actually shocked by the whole stripped-down approach. But now I can see MINSTREL has far better tunes (AND lyrics) than PASSION PLAY, and the playing is incredibly together - so my vote goes to, erm, Codpiece.

Isn't this easy....WTH how is Minstrel winning?!!, Passion Play of course, totally underrated by many progers, a pitty it's just great, Warchild is a bad copy of APP with some weak orchestral arrangements, well and Minstrel isn't bad but can't really stand to APP. top 10 Tull albums. 1-Thick as a Brick 2-A Passion Play 3-Aqualung 4-This Was 5-Stand Up 6-Minstrel in the Gallery 7-Too Old to Rock n Roll, Too Young to Die 8-Catfish Rising 9-Roots to Branches 10-Rock Island

A Passion Play is misnamed - it has no passion at all. It is cold and clinical. Minstrel for me by several miles.

A Passion Play For Me, though Minstrel has really grown on me. Both have some superb highs, but Passion Play gets extra points for being a coherent long track, while Minstrel gets points deducted for tastelessness that ruins some great moments in the generally superb Baker Street Muse, and the fairly weak 0^10=nothing at all and Requiem.
Both have highs, both have lows. APP has a higher low.

I always thought that the cold one was Minstrel, with much lack of ideas, even though good but not Tull's standards. |
I agree with both statements; Passion Play, although the worser, is certainly the more lively. It's very goony, goofy, over the top, etc.
Minstrel is the cold, dark one, with underplayed theatrics and real world grounding. Of course, that's partly why I like it; it's resonant (because it's depressing-ish), and it's an interesting surprise amidst the more over orchestrated Warchilds and Too Olds of the Tull canon.

A Passion Play!!! They're both great albums, but APP and TAAB are definitely Tull's finest hour.

| At last someone's on my side!... Completly correct with that sir! TAAB and APP are their finest pieces of prog, then you have their finest rock piece Aqualung. Then you have an atemped to make another Aqualung but they failed with MITG, it's not bad but it's not really good, it's quite empty the music, really cold.

I couldn't agree more. But I still prefer A Passion Play more for the very reasons you mentioned .
