Alright, this match consists of some newer bands in the prog fold. I'm not quite sure who I'm going to vote for yet, but I'll have to wait and see first.

Haven't heard anything from Echolyn yet. Guess you'll have to wait for my vote. I've probably heard most from Spock's Beard. The Light is one of my top 5 albums. One album each from Transatlantic and The Flower Kings. Both very enjoyable. Roine Stolt in two bands, Neal Morse in two - one shared. Echolyn almost feels a little out of place...

I love all of these bands about the same, actually.

The more I think about it, the more I keep leaning toward Mr. Stolt and his band.
One more for TFK |

I have heard from Echolyn the least, but probably they are the band on the list which fits my taste the best.

Spock's beard = 70's prog revisited "à la" Neal's way (witch mean with
some contrapuntic vocal and a lot of Beatlesque theme and melodies)
Flower Kings = 70's prog revisited "à la" Roine's way (witch mean play prog with a lot of jazz fusion influence only because you have the best fusion bassist of today and nearly a copy of Jaco Pastorius playing) TransAtlantic = Roine's VS Neal ideas....Neal wins most of the time but it's an Ego trip Echolyn = Good rock with a touch of pop blended with some Gentle Giant kind of way to compose a song. Strongs vocals, no endless solo and doesn't sounds like a rip off band from the 70's By the way, TFK and SB (even thought they are rip off band from the 70's in a certain way) are good at it cause they have create a new way of doing what the 70's brought...not like the Watch, Magic Pie and all those clones... my vote obviously goes to Echolyn! We're in 2008...not 74! |

This poll is kind of Apple vs Orange vs Apple vs Apple.
TFK, Spock's Beard and Transatlantic are variations on a theme and enjoy the same fan base (for the most part). Echolyn is different musically, thematically and technically. Of the 4 bands, Echolyn's music speaks to me, however I enjoy some of the music from the other 3.
Of the 4 bands, which finds its way into your CD/MP3/Computer/Stereo.....?
For me, Echolyn by a long shot. I can't remember the last time I played any SB, TFK, TA.

A pretty useless post, and not disagreeing with anything, really, but... I think it may be more apple vs. pear vs. apple vs. apple, in a way.
Echolyn and Spock's Beard had enough perceived similarities for two members in different years to pit them up against each-other. Both are thought to have similar influences (Gentle Giant as one) and I think both have AORish/ pop qualities. Echolyn is the only one of this list that I rather like, and I don't at all care for Spock's Beard (as well as the others on the list) so they're obviously quite different (less related than the others are to each-other, but I'd throw 'em in the same fruit salad). Echolyn is easier on my ear than the others, but still difficult listening for me. Echolyn or Spock's Beard? Echolyn vs Spock's Beard If you go to the Echolyn page (or do a forum search), you'll notice that other than this topic, those are the only times listed where Echolyn is pitted against any band. There is this topic: Glass Hammer, Echolyn, Meshuggah but that's just looking for recommendations of each artist and not putting them up against each-other. |

Spock's Beard with the caveat that I've only heard a song or two by Echolyn.
No argument that the Beard, The Flower Kings and Transatlantic are rooted in 70's symphonic prog, "Spock's Beard' does it best. If I could take this opportunity though...What does AOR stand for? Thanks, |

^^ If I'm not mistaken AOR originally stands for Album-Oriented Rock, but its current meaning is something like radio-oriented rock. Correct me If I'm wrong...

The thing about the term AOR is that it implies conservative rock middle-of-the-roadness. It's frequently more of an adjective than an acronym. =)
