Topic: Best Steve Hackett Guitar Solo with Genesis Posted: April 13 2008 at 02:54 |
What's your favorite Steve Hackett guitar solo when he was still with Genesis? I enjoy the one in "The Musical Box" for what it's worth.

1.- Firth of Fifth, with electric guitar no doubt.
2.- Horizons with acoustic guitar
3.- The Return of the Giant Hogweed: The most revolutionary, that was suposedly the first double handed tapping technique performance in Rock.

Ikhnaton and Itsacon and their band of merry men, followed by Aching Men's Feet, followed by Anyway. Always seen the musical box as a guitar-organ duet.

Firth of Fifth, which I would think would be an almost universal choice.
I also love the organ--guitar duel in Musical Box, which you can really hear even more clearly in the early unfinished Musical Box from the BBC Sessions, with fantastic stereo seperation.
An overlooked solo is from Ripples, beautiful understated playing.
Hairless Heart is another overlooked one, because it coincides with Tony's synth.

When I started listening to Genesis, Hackett's guitar break in the middle of The Fountain Of Salmacis was by far the musical moment that impressed me most as it came to his guitar playing. It's not his most creative one, but I used to be really impressed by it, because it was so powerful!
As the years go by, I learned to appreciate his solo in Firth Of Fifth more and more. This solo took some time before it began to impress me. From a more objective point of view, I'd say that that solo is his crowning achievement. He does so many things in that solo, and with so much feeling. But I can see I'm not the only one who thinks that way .

I've always thought that Hackett's guitar solo at the end of 'THE LAMIA' was one of his best. His performance during 'HERE COMES THE SUPERNATURAL ANAESTHETIST' is also extremely good, and the fact that these two songs are listed one after the other make it a great moment when listening to THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY
(p.s. this is my first contribution to the archives!)

When I saw the Musical Box (Genesis cover band), I believe that it was the Rutherford - clone who did the guitar part of Supernatural Anaesthesist. I remember being quite surprised, because I'd think that it would have been Hackett. Now was it Hackett or Rutherford in the original version?

The solo in the live version of "The Knife", without doubt. One of my favourite guitar solos.

For electric, Firth of Fifth. For acoustic, Horizons or Hairless Heart.
