Avishai Cohen is an Israelan double-bass player and leads his own band. I've seen him in concert some two years ago and he's comming to Warsaw again. I thought I'd introduce him to the archives. You can listen to the songs from his albums on his myspace: http://www.myspace.com/avishaicohenmusic.

Checking for my own enjoyment (wish more members would). First impressions... good music.  I really like "Hadava Hadasha" -- generally like the music best when piano is prominent (better when it's double-bass and piano).  It's a bit too on the "easy-listening" side for me at times, but nice.  Now on the last track; very enjoyable.  Obviously quite the "classical" influence (pianist sounds from that tradition).

It's good to see and hear live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW5hpdTbq68

I just love Shuvi Elai. Albeit I agree it's a bit poppy. But I love the ethnic feel in it. He sings in Hebrew, doesn't he? This language sounds beautiful. Very melodic.

I assumed it was Hebrew.  "Shuvi Elai" is a very interesting track, but rather too poppy for my tastes.  Enjoying 11wives now.  Fine double-bassist and pianist.  And he played with Chick Corea.  Course a lack of rock may be seen as problem (jazz-fusion but no so much jazz-rock), nor psyche,, so not sure quite how abundantly suitable he is (though he has a relation to other artists in PA).  Jazz/ethnic/classical/ pop (particularly jazz).  But I forget his other songs now.

Here's the bio from his official site: http://www.avishaimusic.com/

Biography - Gently Disturbed

"... one of the most gifted bassists of his generation is finding his own voice as a composer"
The New Yorker

"... one of the best double-bassists in the world"
Kerstan Mackness, Time Out London

"...a transcendent example of the capacity of music...to reach beyond geographical and political boundaries..."
Don Heckman, the Los Angeles Times.

Bassist/Composer/Band Leader Avishai Cohen, born April 20, 1970 in Israel, is a musician who has been called a jazz visionary of global proportions by Downbeat, and declared one of the 100 Most Influential Bass Players of the 20th Century by Bass Player magazine.

Cohen is not only renowned around the world as an influential double bassist and profound composer, but also as a visionary bandleader following in the footsteps of Mingus, Dave Holland, Jaco Pastorius, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden, Stanley Clarke, and even Sting. In fact, every move Avishai Cohen makes routinely causes waves of critical praise.

Now, with the release of Gently Disturbed, his fourth release on his own Razdaz Recordz label, Cohen is once again breaking new ground with a reconfigured trio that takes full advantage of their significant musical talents to channel their creative vision.

The trio now features Israeli pianist Shai Maestro. Since Cohen is an accomplished pianist in his own right, and has performed on bass with such acclaimed jazz pianists as Danilo Perez, Brad Mehldau and of course Chick Corea, it is even more striking to note that Maestro just turned 21. Rounding out the trio is the brilliant drummer Mark Guiliana, who has been playing and touring with Cohen since 2003 and who was cited in Modern Drummer’s 2007 Readers Poll 2007 as “one of the best up-and-coming stars of today’s drumming scene.”

While to outward appearances the trio would seem to be the standard piano-bass-drum formula, the music they’ve created on Gently Disturbed is far from the standard jazz trio repertoire. Featuring nine original compositions (written either by Cohen or by the trio collaboratively) and one traditional Israeli song, Gently Disturbed is an amalgamation of melody and groove, complexity and simplicity that nearly redefines the concept of jazz.

Gently Disturbed follows last year’s release of As Is…Live at the Blue Note CD and DVD, which Razdaz released in partnership with Half Note Records, and which Jazziz called “a singular vision, and…a joy to experience.” That release served as an overview of Cohen’s career, including performances from his critically acclaimed catalog, beginning with his 1998 debut on Stretch Records, Adama, and its three subsequent Stretch releases, and continuing through his releases on Razdaz, At Home (2005,) and Continuo (2006.)

Bassist/composer Avishai Cohen was one of the first Israel-born jazz musicians to gain widespread attention in the U.S. Cohen moved to New York permanently in 1992 after studying classical/jazz piano and bass in Israel, (Music & Arts Academy and with Maestro Michael Klinghoffer) and in the United States (in St. Louis).
After attending both the New School and Mannes College of Music in New York City, Cohen performed with fellow students such as pianist Brad Mehldau. His studies with bassist Andy Gonzalez led to his performing in a Latin jazz band that included Abel Rodriguez and Ray Santiago.

As a result of this experience, combined with his deep understanding and love of Latin music and jazz, Cohen got the call to join pianist Danilo Perez’s trio. Cohen moved on from Perez’s band in 1996 to become a founding member of the legendary Chick Corea’s sextet, Origin. Signed to Corea’s label, Stretch/Concord Records, Cohen released four CDs: Adama (1998,) Devotion (1999,) Colors ( 2000,) and Unity (2001.)

Until late in 2002, Avishai also worked as a member of the Chick Corea New Trio (the bassist is prominently featured on the 10 DVD boxed set Chick Corea: Rendezvous In New York), and as accompanist to other jazz note-worthies, including Bobby McFerrin, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Nnenna Freelon, Claudia Acuna, Paquito D’Rivera and many others.

Avishai has become a first call musician in multiple genres. In 2003 he made a studio recording with pop-soul artist Alicia Keys, and has also performed concert works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and The Boston Pops Symphony.

2003 was a busy year for the bassist/composer. In addition to his playing and composing activities, Cohen decided to create his own record label, Razdaz Recordz. The label’s first release was Cohen’s Lyla, which was followed by At Home, Continuo and As Is…Live at the Blue Note. In addition to releasing Cohen’s recordings.
Razdaz released the debut recording of drummer Mark Guiliana's genre-busting band Heernt, Locked In A Basement. In 2008, in addition to Gently Disturbed, Razdaz is releasing I Forgot What You Taught Me from Cohen’s former pianist Sam Barsh, and Evolution from guitarist and oudist Amos Hoffman.

It is in Hebrew. Shuvi Elai (שובי אליי) means come back to me (and it refers to a woman since in Hebrew the verbs differentiate between sexes - if it were for a man, it would be Shuv Elai).

Funny enough, my wife just told me there is another Jazz musician called Avishai Cohen which also has a trio, but he is a trumpet player and plays with two saxophone players, a brother and sister called Yuval and Anat Cohen (my wife learned Law with Yuval). This trio is also a highly acclaimed group as is bassist Avishai's trio.
