Even though the Musical box is Genesis greatest song, Dancing with the moonlight knight is a better opener! One of the best ever if I may be so bold

Genesis have always opened albums with songs that grab your attention and reel you in straight away, with the obvious exception of Invisible Touch, where the opener makes you want to place the CD back in its case, place the case on the shelf and pretened it never happened...
Sory, I had to get that in..for old times sake.. Now, from this list of classic opening songs, I'm going to go for Dance on a Volcano. Yes, it's one of my top Genesis songs, and it's the song that got me hooked on this band, but it also makes a strong statement of where the band were at the time; defying the critics who were writing the obituaries, after Peter left, and proving that Genesis were not just still a force in prog rock, but had matured as musicians to an enormous extent. Dave Henstchells production was also a breath of fresh air after the previous efforts. After Volcano, I would say 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight' comes next, although honourale mentions should go to some post WAW openers, such as 'Down and Out' and 'Behind the Lines' Edited by Blacksword - August 05 2008 at 13:28 |

"Watcher Of The skies" - (But almost a tie with The Lamb).
The impact of the "in yer face" mellotron/organ intro opener of Watcher Of The Skies was so strong for me, it is unlike any other Prog music I've ever heard. Actually I could easily pick any of your selections listed, "The Lamb" or even "Firth Of Fifth" for that matter, but this non-vocal opener gets my vote,
I mean, Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman are great technical keyboardists and grandiose pianists , which I dearly love, but I still believe Tony Banks beats them on creativity and originality.

Well as an album opener I chose Dancing with The Moonlit Knight , twasn't easy mind ya . But live, Watcher of the Skies is the all-time "entree" for vintage Genesis , almost like a call to arms , when that "epiphanic" mellotron kicks in . What goose bumps......I guess you had to live it to comprehend .

I just realised Genesis has one of the BEST openers on any Prog albums.
-Looking for Someone is as great as the album gets. -Musical Box is not THE opener, but as a song itself it's a masterpiece. -Watcher of the Skies is one of the best openers, though sometimes I feel as an opener the mellotron intro is too long. -Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is almost the same as Looking for Someone(not reffering to composition), with Peter's voice opening the album, and the song being one of the best of the entire album. -The Lamb is a very good opener, but it's just that. It has the very up-lifting chorus, that is great for an Intro to the album, but the song isn't that great. -Dance on a Volcano is powerful up to some point. -Eleventh Earl of Mar is as up-lifting you can get, though the guitar intro with Tony's keys is quite darky and somber which gives the whole album a special atmosphere, though it isn't the typical Genesis intro. I'll go with Looking for Someone. |

All of these songs are good album openers, five of them are even great on their own. As an opening song, I vote for Watcher of the Skies. |

amazing... the differences in people's tastes NEVER fails to amaze me hahhaha Dancing with the Moonlit Knight... nothing weak about it.. in fact... rather a muscular album opener to a group who have the toughness of soggy pasta..... |

Dance on a Volcano & Eleventh Earl of Mar
I think the other openers are kind of weak, EXCEPT MUSICAL BOX!. Edited by Abstrakt - August 04 2008 at 08:23 |

Watcher of the Skies - I love the mellotron intro, just ahead of The Musical Box with its sense of menace. Dancing with the Moonlit Night is also excellent! In fact, every track on the list s excellent.
