Topic: Favourite track from... Peter Gabriel III Posted: October 04 2008 at 10:27 |
Well, curious as to what people think on this one. Love the whole album (probably the best of my enormous recent spree), and I think there could be a real range of opinions here...
I'm torn about five ways myself.
Explanations for votes would be nice, and I'd be interested to see what people who vote for particular tracks think of the album as a whole as well.

Family Snapshot and Lead a Normal Life at the top. Peter really made quite a departure from Genesis with his solo career, none more starkly than with this album. When it came out it was really hard to digest, but as time passed I grew to really appreciate the experimental nature of the music. Most of those songs are about alienation. I was in high school at the time and could identify with that.

His third and fourth albums are, in my opinion, classics of music, with many strong songs, and nothing below average (if you don't see "Start" as a real song). Of his third, it is hard between Family Snapshot, Games Without Frontiers and Biko. I think I'll chose the later for the lyrics. Otherwise, those three are equally brillant.
I really like those two albums..

I was about eighteen when the album came out, and I didn't find it hard to swallow... It seemed to fit right in with the mood of the times (early Talking Heads, Bowie's LODGER) and the concept of "drums without cymbals" was exciting: King Crimson tried it too, and it was copied, of course, on a megahit by a certain (baldheaded) someone who would go on to perform at LiveAid on both sides of the Atlantic. Favourite tracks? Not easy, but today I'll go for 'No Self-Control', because of that wonderful combination of inspired vocal lines and Steve Reich-derived persussion!

Now that you mention it, I actually don't remember this album or anything, anything at all. Although I do recall...

I'm a sucker for the radio-friendly "Games Without Frontiers". Brings back memories.

Biko, fantastic track, I like the imaginative blend of instruments such as bagpipes with African rhythms and the famntastic bass drums, it all contributes to give that sad atmosphere of a funeral and respect at the same time.
Simply brilliant.

Like Slartibartfarst, I voted Family Snapshot, though Lead a Normal Life was a close second. I almost even gave it the sympathy vote as it does't have any at this point, but Family Snapshot is such a fantastic song. Peter's voice does some of it's best work when he growls then belts out 'I've been waiting for this'.
Fantastic music.
I find it slightly strange that 'Lead a Normal Life' has three second place votes, but no first place votes.

MAN!
Was this one tough! I voted for Family Snapshot, but when I first got the record (on vinyl, yet), my fave was I Don't Remember. I absolutely love this entire recording however, and could sing the whole thing even without it playing. Every cut is a favorite.

I voted for "I Don't Remember" because its probably a good song, but mostly because I just don't remember what I liked best. I know it wasn't Biko though.

After long consideration... went for And Through The Wire. Great guitars and vocals, solid lyrics and a real rock basis.
To be fair, it could've been any of
Family Snapshot No Self Control Games Without Frontiers Start And Through The Wire Intruder Lead A Normal Life
Interesting how broad the favourites are... especially when compared to the Moving Pictures poll, where two tracks have really substantial leadsy.
