Topic: Favourite Big Build Up moments in prog Posted: October 12 2008 at 17:59 |
You know the type i mean, epic build ups that make some of the greatest prog songs what they are?
My personal favourites are in:
The Mars Volta - Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus, Cassandra Gemini King Crimson - Starless Opeth - To Bid You Farewell, Harlequin Forest Mostly Autumn - Shrinking Violet Mahavishnu Orchestra - One Word Pat Metheny Group - Minuano Pink Floyd - Echoes, Shine On Your Crazy Diamond
Some are just simply epic and have to be listened to from the beginning for the full effect. But the end result... is better than sex.

Yes, good question, Kibble
The first ''build up'' that pops up in my mind is FRACTURE from King Crimson.....Starting slow, building up, slowing again to build up again for good until total explosion..............(Sounds pornographic when i read this sentence )
I guess KC is good for that....Starless of course, Larks Tongue in Aspic part 1 intro,, etc...!

Just sitting here thinking of this and three just came to mind. Starless (already pegged) Awaken - Yes Supper's Ready - Genesis Those are a few of the ones that bring the goose bumps on when that crescendo hits and lifts the imagination. Can't think of any newer releases that have done this for me. Maybe my mind has just become junktified.

I dont think you can call it a build-up but man how I love the grand finale in "The Musical Box"! Gives me chills everytime I hear it.

"Close to the Edge" - The guitar build-up that climaxes with the Wakeman keyboard solo, particularly on the live 'Yessongs' version.

[fanboyism]
what about 21 freaking 12?? That finale is still one of the most spinechilling moments of prog!
and who could forget the almighty shrill shrieking sections of...
CYGNUS X-1!!
[/fanboyism]
Of course lots of other bands have some great moments
Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing
Tool - Parabol/Parabola
Chris Squire - Silently Falling
Phideaux - Formaldehyde
That's off the top of my head. More later.

God bless you, dear man, especially the Manzanera led explosion on the second. Such great music, sadly underappreciated by so many on this site . Oh well..... Speaking of which, Mackay's solo in My Only Love , I mean you can seen it coming from miles..... I am getting nostalgic.

Back to Montreal, you need to find this dominatrix to give you a purpose in life and stop crying

The two I immediately thought of have already been said. "Starless" and "Close To The Edge" I also love the closing minutes of Pink Floyds "Dogs." Its not quite a "build up" but very moving. Great topic .

Restricting this to intros (for no particular reason) i've come up with the following top ten:
Let There Be More Light - Pink Floyd
Porroh Man - Big Country*
Yours is no Disgrace - es from Yessongs
With a Little Help fromMy Friends - Joe Cocker from Woodstock*
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Revealing Science of God - Yes
We're Not Gonna Take It - The Who from Woodstock
Dreammare - Uriah Heep Heart of the Sunrise - Yes from Yessongs
Birth, Life and Death - Arcadium
* are progressive rock songs from non-prog bands
Mostly instrumental but Revealing and the Tommy offering are interesting as they are big vocal build ups.

I kind of like the middle of Opeth's "Hessian Peel"

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

My favorite is probably the one in Solar Musick Suite by Steve Hillage.
Those who have heard it know which one I mean.

"Heartbeat" by Roman Bunka from his first soloalbum "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto". and I wonder why "Shadow of the Hierophant" by Steve Hackett has not been named yet. "Meurglys III - the Songwriter's Guild" by VdGG has a good one in the instrumental section after the line "there's nothing else but my guitar - I suppose he'll have to do"

The final 15 minutes of Brave by Marillion. "The Great Escape" is the perfect crescendo before coming back down with the beautiful "Made Again".

The final that starts with: 'Can't you feel our souls ignite' Got to sit through the lot, preferably in a darken room, but when they reach that bit it will get me every time. More an outro than a crescendo, though.
