Topic: Favourite Big Build Up moments in prog Posted: October 26 2008 at 06:13 |
There's a very good build up and crescendo finish to the final track 'Pilgrim' on After The Fire's album, 'Signs Of Change'.

Good Choice ! I also agree with Octavarium and Echoes.
But of course the most famous build up song ever is Tubular Bells . Well maybe a bit repetitive but it's surely building up. Monsters & Men by TFK is also a nice one in this aspect.

I'd go for the ending part of Echoes. Once the sonar sounds return, the quiet synth slows builds up, the guitar chimes in a then the synth builds up to this mind-blowing climax.
Honorable mentions to Saucerful of Secrets, the Musical Box and the live version of The Fish.

I almost forgot to mention Reflection - Tool |
Hmm, I've never thought of Reflection as a build up. In general, it seems to have the same dynamic level and mood all the way through. In fact, I tend to think of it as 11 minutes of stuff over and over (which for some strange reason I absolutely love, despite the fact that I hate repetitivity). 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) IMO is a much better example of a build up.
Let's see. Favorite build ups.
"Storm" by GYBE!
"Octavarium" by Dream Theater
"Hessian Peel" by Opeth
And I think the quiet jazzy guitar solo from "La Villa Strangiato" from about 3 1/2 minutes in to about 5 1/2 minutes in is quite possibly the best buildup I've ever heard. |
I don't know really, i consider it more a build up of instrumentation and texture up until the finale where the distortion finally kicks in and Maynard dishes out some of the best lyrics ever before a great thrash out. Not really in dynamics, but in layers i would say.

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets (Live 1970-1972) Start with some strange sounds & stuff, then more and more until it sounds like total chaos, backed by a drum solo. Then it explodes, and the best chord sequence ever starts playing!

Damn, i forgot the one in Awaken... Good choice
Which bit in Supper's would you be talking about?
|
The final that starts with: 'Can't you feel our souls ignite' Got to sit through the lot, preferably in a darken room, but when they reach that bit it will get me every time. More an outro than a crescendo, though. |
Excellent However, i prefer the part where the flute comes in with a repeated melody after the Willow Farm section. Hairs rise on the back of my neck.

The final 15 minutes of Brave by Marillion. "The Great Escape" is the perfect crescendo before coming back down with the beautiful "Made Again".

"Heartbeat" by Roman Bunka from his first soloalbum "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto". and I wonder why "Shadow of the Hierophant" by Steve Hackett has not been named yet. "Meurglys III - the Songwriter's Guild" by VdGG has a good one in the instrumental section after the line "there's nothing else but my guitar - I suppose he'll have to do"

I kind of like the middle of Opeth's "Hessian Peel"

Restricting this to intros (for no particular reason) i've come up with the following top ten:
Let There Be More Light - Pink Floyd
Porroh Man - Big Country*
Yours is no Disgrace - es from Yessongs
With a Little Help fromMy Friends - Joe Cocker from Woodstock*
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Revealing Science of God - Yes
We're Not Gonna Take It - The Who from Woodstock
Dreammare - Uriah Heep Heart of the Sunrise - Yes from Yessongs
Birth, Life and Death - Arcadium
* are progressive rock songs from non-prog bands
Mostly instrumental but Revealing and the Tommy offering are interesting as they are big vocal build ups.

The two I immediately thought of have already been said. "Starless" and "Close To The Edge" I also love the closing minutes of Pink Floyds "Dogs." Its not quite a "build up" but very moving. Great topic .

God bless you, dear man, especially the Manzanera led explosion on the second. Such great music, sadly underappreciated by so many on this site . Oh well..... Speaking of which, Mackay's solo in My Only Love , I mean you can seen it coming from miles..... I am getting nostalgic. |

[fanboyism]
what about 21 freaking 12?? That finale is still one of the most spinechilling moments of prog!
and who could forget the almighty shrill shrieking sections of...
CYGNUS X-1!!
[/fanboyism]
Of course lots of other bands have some great moments
Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing
Tool - Parabol/Parabola
Chris Squire - Silently Falling
Phideaux - Formaldehyde
That's off the top of my head. More later.

Yes, good question, Kibble
The first ''build up'' that pops up in my mind is FRACTURE from King Crimson.....Starting slow, building up, slowing again to build up again for good until total explosion..............(Sounds pornographic when i read this sentence )
I guess KC is good for that....Starless of course, Larks Tongue in Aspic part 1 intro,, etc...! |
Sailor's Tale, Epitath....Talking Drum ...... Time for a dominatrix, Antoine!
