Topic: JL Ponty vs Weather Report Posted: October 16 2008 at 20:08 |
Lets not forget Ponty's amazing recordings from Aurora, Enigmatic Ocean, Imaginary Voyage, Cosmic Messenger, Fables, Mystical Adventures . We know how hot the Jaco fans are but lets get a battle going here. I voted for Jean-Luc, too many great albums , even though Sweetnighter remains a desert island choice.

From Weather Report I've heard more, never really enjoyed fully, way too jazzy, still I like some tunes. On the other hand, Jean-Luc has Enigmatic Ocean which is a killer Jazz Fusion album, also one of his latest releases with Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke called The Rite of Strings, is really good. Also you have his participation on Mahavishnu 3rd and 4th best albums. And as well in Zappa. He gets my vote.

Weather Report by far, a very easy choice. Zawinul and Shorter created some beautiful music back in the day.

I voting for JLP.
"Jean Luc Ponty Live" is a masterpiece! Ralph Armstrong's bass is so cool on that CD !

I love Weather Report, but I haven't heard Ponty yet. No vote from me.

I like both. I prefer older Weather Report but JLP was pretty consistent in his output.
Overall I went with JLP. I'd like to see him tour the U.S again.

You are a bassman ! Ralphe is an amazingly underrated player, saw him live doing Egocentric Molecules , in his red overalls , groovin', dancin' while blistering through his instrument . A true prog moment

Weather Report by far. Ponty had his days up to around "Individual Choice" or maybe "Open Mind". Then after that he morphed into playing something more akin to "new age".
