I gave Stanley my love, for I love the bass.
Though all of them are masters of their instruments, my bias makes me pick Stanley.

Chick is so prolific and has travelled so many pathways his prowess cannot be denied. Al has grown, I'll  give him that ( I thought his playing in the 70s too technique-oriented, no emotion), and he is an amazing guitarist--one of the best. Lenny's smoothness and subtlety always amazed me but, I have to admit, there are a few drummers that I've seen that I would rate higher (Steve Gadd, Zakir Hussein, Trilok Gurtu, Bill Bruford). STanley has been less on my radar screen since the 80s but having heard some fairly recent stuff of his I am of the mind that he may be the greatest bassist I've ever heard. (Never seen him, though!!Unhappy )

Ain't that sad, almost no one remembers Bill when it comes to the RTF discussions.  Granted, he was only on board for the first album, and having met him I more or less understand why he left, but man did he set the standard for fusion, not just for RTF.

Well, they are all amazing musicians and I just saw Al Dimeola live tonite.............Wow. Hmmmm, who is the best? They are all better than the vast majority of musicians out there period but I will have to lean towards Al Dimeola only because I prefer him from a taste standpoint.

In the throes of writing a Stanley Clarke biog,  and researches have minded me that the pre-1974 line-up of the jazz rock RTF was Corea, Clarke, White and the great Bill Connors, but at least one recording on the compilation Return to the 7th Galaxy, also reminds that the Latin jazz version of RTF (early 70's) included Joe Farrell,  Flora Purim, Airto. But then  gigs of the jazz rock line-up were flexible in 1973 with the likes of  Joe Farrell and (perrenial session drummer) Steve Gadd sitting in with Corea, Clarke and Connors.

I think at the time of RTF Corea was the best. However, I think Di Meola has done nothing but drastically improve every time he plays and is now the best of the bunch. I think he def. stole the show on the new Live album.

Bill Connors should definitely be included. Al Di Meola didn't really outperform him until Romantic Warrior, and Connor's playing on Hymn of the 7th Galaxy has a lot more feeling than most of Di Meola's work with the band, and he wasn't far behind in terms of technique either.

Individually Al Di Meola is my favourite, he'a amazing.

But within the confines of the band I have to vote for Chick, is his music, his touch is present in every single second of Return To Forever's music.
