I've listened to both, and I own all of The Mars Volta's studio records (bought them all in four months, even though I decided I didn't like them!), and Tetragrammaton is my absolute favorite, although there are some shorter tracks on De-Loused in the Comatorium that are amazing. My favorite track on Francis the Mute happens to be the opener.

I'm getting a lot of Porcupine Tree and The Flower Kings and Spock's Beard, and I understand they're wonderful, but come on guys- we're prog-lovers- in search of other great musical acts!

Has anybody heard the other groups here? And what are your opinions? If they suck, that's fine, but let me know why!

Most of what you've got here is symphonic in nature, and the biggest bands just so happen to release the best epics in this case, IMO.

I suppose I can agree with that (what with The Flower Kings having three freaking entries), but there are many other genres here too!

Then you're in for a treat! I HIGHLY recommend Stranger in Your Soul - Neal Morse himself still calls it "The epic to end all epics"! And it's rare that a musician can say something that bold about their own work, and not risk sounding absurd...

I can only safely say this from across the internet: I think I like it even better than Close to the Edge! (runs and ducks for cover)...although still no match for Gates of Delirium...

Apparently you have, because you put Transatlantic's Duel with the Devil in your poll. That's on the same album and everything. Or are you saying something else? Like you just don't know which of theirs is best because you haven't listened to any of it? Hm. Anyways.

Sleeping in Traffic by Beardfish has not gotten any votes but really needs attention. That band's last two albums have been works of sheer or almost sheer genius. Do not pass up the chance to listen to them.

The first one that jumped off the monitor and hit me in the head is Octavarium (Dream Theater, 2005)

I also adore Anesthetize from PTree's Scenes from a Blank Planet - magnificent musical virtuosity.

I've heard of most of them, yeah, and heard many of the epics too.
Despite Dream Theater being one the bands getting me into prog, I don't find Octavarium as special as many people feel it is.
A good song, but it's not really that innovative or anything.
A lot of the other bands, I just never got into.
As Stonebeard said, a lot of the stuff is symphonic in nature, and I don't get into that stuff much.... at least not anymore anyway (my listening to Yes etc over and over again phase ended 2 years ago).

Some very fine pieces here, hard to choose for me, but with all that i prefer Duel With the Devil (Transatlantic, 2001)

The allure of Octavarium to me is mostly in the way it's organized. Most epics, especially prog metal epics, start and stop a lot. They speed up and slow down. However, Octavarium builds almost steadily for twenty minutes. That to me is why it is fantastic. Most of the rest of Dream Theater's stuff, though, is pretty hit or miss.

I've heard Harvest of Souls and for the life of me can't figure out why people think it's great... maybe it's just exciting in comparison with most IQ. Tongue

Hi Robert. I know quite a few of these.

The Glass Hammer epic is brilliant, that whole album "Shadowlands" is great. I also like In Earnest, Harvest of Souls and Anaesthetize. However, it came down to a 3 way battle for top spot, and I vote as follows, after much thought:-

1. DT -Octavarium

2. Glass Hammer - Behind The Great Beyond

3. Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing

4. Tangent - In Earnest

5. IQ - Harvest of Souls

6. PT - Anaesthetize

Octvarium is for my money the finest piece by DT and as far removed from their latest mainstream stuff as you'll find. Unfortunately I don't know any of the Flower Kings tracks yet. Otherwise I'm sure they would feature very highly.

Robert, following on from my ^ last post, I've not as yet got Transatlantic's 2nd album. The debut album SMPTe is very very good however, and if you've not heard that I'd recommend it, knowing your musical taste. Incidentally the epic off their debut, "All of The Above" is quite superb. It would have been very high on my list had it appeared here.

I'm sticking with Octavarium however, just ahead of the Glass Hammer epic. I really like GH.
