Topic: Zeuhl Face-Off: Dün VS Happy Family Posted: October 27 2008 at 18:36 |

Today through out yet another event less day of school, I decided to go on a bit of a Zeuhl marathon switching from Dün, Happy Family and then to Magma and of course that made my day much more eventful and much more interesting. (its fun to walk down the halls listening to Dün :B)
Anyways... I decided to make a poll to see what you guys think is perhaps the better Zeuhl band: Dün or Happy Family? (I decided not to use Magma because they're basically the ones that represent the entirety of the Zeuhl subgenre and probably would sweep the competition because they are amazingly good also.) So which one will it be? Dün, the one-shot wonder that released an album so dense and unique that it even makes Gentle Giant seem like mainstream sellouts? (Over-exaggerating here but I find their music to be much harder to access than Gentle Giant but I still love them to death.) A band that was able to make only one album that fused together canterbury, zappa, symphonic, zeuhl, and RIO, so perfectly to create the masterpiece that is Eros? or Happy Family, a very interesting band from Japan that created and recorded music that was also ridiculously technical with hints of Univers Zero, Zappa, King Crimson and other such related influences that sometimes results in passages of pure chaos but still manage to stay in control of the music? (Grag I need to stop riting ridiculously long sentences.) Let the face off begin. >:{D |

Like both muchly, but I am going with Dün. Eros was such an important album in my musical journey and impressed me greatly on first spin, and, oh I was obsessed with it at one time. Happy Family I grew to like much more. I was rather disappointed with Tossco when I got it, but liked the debut much more. I just didn't put Happy Family up there with Bondage Fruit or Koenjihyakkei. I really like the debut by HF and have come to appreciate Tossco more, but HF didn't have the same impact on me as Dün.

WHile this sounds cliche, it really is a case of whichever one I'm listening to at the moment. For some reason these bands are so out there that I associate them together, this poll implies that I was not far off in comparing them it seems. |

I certainly respect and enjoy DUN's music, but for my taste HAPPY FAMILY wins fairly easily.

I have not had the opportunity to hear Dun, so maybe a vote for HF wouldn't be fair. But I really dig HF.
And regarding comparisons to Bondage Fruit and Koenjihyakkei, they are all different bands for different moods. Love them all. |

My preference really depends on my mood; if I want something more spontaneous and improvised, I'll go for Dün, and if I want something more consise, I'll go for Happy Family. So, it mostly comes down to preferring two great albums over one. Happy Family it is.

Two excellent bands, although I feel both are more Avant-Prog than Zeuhl overall. Happy Family's debut does have it's Zeuhl-ish moments (as well as being very heavy), but definitely not as prominent as on a Koenjihyakkei album for example. Anyways, I like Happy Family most of these two (mostly because of the masterpiece Toscco) but Dün are incredible as well!

Yeah, they sound more like Avant-Prog than Zeuhl... I was gonna title this poll as a Avant-Prog Face Off but since Dün and Happy Family are under the zeuhl section of the website, I just decided to putthis as a Zeuhl poll though I do agree that Avant-Prog would be a better way to describe their music. Also for those of you who didn't notice, I voted for Dün because they're incredible and I got used to their music right away and found them to be such an amazing band. Happy Family is an also amazing band but it took me a bit longer to get used to their music.. for some reason. But I like them both... |

I only have Tosco so I compare this one with Eros and for me HF are more to my taste.
I agree that both albums are quite far from regulae zeuhl and avant-garde seems more apropriate.
Both albums are not easylistening and in a way have some common sound so it's realy a fair comparison.

Dun, by quite a wide margin. Eros is a minor masterpiece.
There are lots of good things about Happy Family, but for me the whole is slightly less than the sum of the parts - as others have pointed out, there are many better exponents of Zeuhl/avant prog on the Japanese scene.

Two of my favorite Zeuhl/Avant-prog bands.
Dun's only album has been a really important influence/inspiration in the development of newer forms of Zeuhl, like Bondage Fruit, the same Happy Family and Koenjihyakkei of course, so, this comes very close, but taking into consideration both great HF albums (from which I can't choose), and speaking strictly in musical output terms, I'll vote for them. |

I'm actually listening to Happy Family now, and it's only solidifying that it's Dun. Happy Family are great, but Toscco is simply too long to achieve its full potential.

I seem to be in the minority, but I prefer Happy Family's debut to Toscco. |

I still need to check that one out. AMG rates it just as highly as Toscco (both are ****1/2), so it's definitely high on my want list. |
