Renaissance - Song Of Scheherezade
Available 1/20/09 at seeofsound.com The first ever DVD to feature one of the great progressive-rock bands of all time! Song Of Scheherezade features 2 classic live shows: One from a 1976 US tour (Capitol Theatre - Passiac, NJ), and another show from 1979 (Convention Hall - Asbury Park, NJ). Renaissance were originally formed in the late 1960 s by ex-Yardbirds members Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty but both eventually departed leaving the classic line-up of Annie Haslam (Vocals), John Tout (piano), Jon Camp (bass pedals/Vocals) and Terence Sullivan (drums). The later line-up were responsible for the groups most recognized albums Prologue (1972), Ashes Are Burning (1973) and Turn Of The Cards (1975) and Scheherezade and Other Stories (1976) which gained the group a significant fanbase in the US and led to hits in many other countries including UK top ten single Northern Lights. Track Listing/Features: * RUNNING HARD * OCEAN GYPSY * CARPET OF THE SUN * MOTHER RUSSIA * PROLOGUE * SONG OF SCHEHEREZADE MEDLEY: SULTAN / THE YOUNG PRINCE AND THE YOUNG PRINCESS * THE FESTIVAL * THE VULTURES FLY HIGH * JEKYLL AND HYDE * NORTHERN LIGHTS * FOREVER CHANGING * SECRET MISSION * A SONG FOR ALL SEASONS * FLOOD AT LYONS |

Well Cherry Red apparently will be fixing the sound issue and replacing the faulty DVDs (for customers that have already bought it). I'm interested in seeing if the visuals are as bad as people have been saying. I think I can live with the video as long as Annie's vocals aren't a couple octaves too low. |

Bumping this thread back into existence. I have received my copy today and I can now confirm that the sound issue has indeed been fixed and Annie is singing in the usual octaves. The sound reception could definitely be better, bass is too frontloaded and lacking clarity at the same time so it's a buzzing drone which drowns out Sullivan. Video is in black and white but decent, you can make out their faces, don't worry! It's definitely not of the standard of new DVD releases as acknowledged in the sleeve notes (abbreviated and uninformative just like my copy of the LATC remaster, so Renaissance like indeed!) but if you are a fan and, like me, never saw them live, this is probably the best you are going to get. I once browsed through a list of their bootlegs and I didn't find either concert mentioned as videos there, so the band have somehow kept it secret all these years, eh, don't know what's the dope on that! I too express the hope I saw posted elsewhere that the SIghts & Sound concert of 1977 from which the Carpet...video on their PA page derives will someday make it to DVD. Nothing from Novella and no Ashes Are Burning but like LATC this, especially the first concert, covers their best phase well. Performances are excellent though I have still not checked out the Azure D Or songs in the second concert.
And...it's about time the DVD is listed on PA!
