I'm Johan from Chicago, IL. I play guitar and violin and currently in an instrumental classic prog band and an extreme prog metal band.
My favorite classic prog bands: Rush, Focus, Pink Floyd, Camel, Yes, PFM, King Crimson (early), Genesis (early), Le Orne,

prog metal bands: Opeth, Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch, Tool, Vintersorg, ISIS, Shining etc.

Jazz: Pat Metheny, John Abercrombie, Jean-Luc Ponty, Jim Hall, Bill Evans, Jan Hammer, Al Di Meloa, Stephane Grapelli, Johnny Frigo, Ralph Towner, Wes Montgomery, etc...

many others
I love prog archives by the way, I find a new great band every time I log on.

Fantastic. You have good music tastes from what I can see, and finally someone else loves jazz guitar as much as I do (probably). What are your favourite albums?

And yeah, welcome to PA dude. I've been here over a year and I'm still finding a new band every time I come on.

Jazz albums?
Well, the Pat Metheny Group s/t album is probably my favorite jazz album. It got me into jazz in the first place. SOOO many pat albums haha, too many to mention. Kind of Blue, of course. John Abercrombie's Timeless. Jean-Luc Ponty's discography from 1976 to 1984. Jim Hall and Bill Evans, Undercurrent. Many others that I'll remember later.

What are the record stores like in the UK? There's a few great ones in Chicago, even a jazz-only store called The Jazz Mart

Well, to be blunt they suck. It's full of mainstream crap, and the metal, jazz and classical sections have almost no attention paid to them. I tend to buy my CDs online or mostly just download them from iTunes. Have you heard any Mahavishnu Orchestra? Fantastic if you're into heavy improvisational small band jazz. Phil Collins's "Brand X" are also a phenomenon.
