And the Glass Handed Kites is a somewhat proggy album, but I don't really support the idea of adding them any more (I used to). They are in no way a full-on prog band, but if they carry on releasing albums in the style of And the Glass Handed Kites, they might fit in prog related.

I think crossover is the place for them as I also agitated for in this thread:

It seems that the admin team are waiting for the new album to arrive before they decide wether or not Mew belong in PA ( some seem to support the idea though, which I´m really happy about) and in which catagory they belong in.

^ Curiously, the more I listen to Glass Handed Kites the more Dream Pop and less Prog it becomes. Not a problem for me personally - I love Dream Pop and part of me wants their next album to go even furher in that direction.

I've seen them labeled as progressive on several other music sites. They should at least get into the site on prog-related for having some "Clear Musical influence" and the "commonly accepted as prog" points down.

Oy, why not in crossover?

Any of those Prog music sites?

The "Clear Musical Influences" are not the clear - listening to them I hear plenty of Indie influences (Alt Rock, Shoegazzing, Dream Pop etc) but very little Prog influence - that could imply to Baroque Pop just as easily as it can New Prog. There are bands in both those ill-defined categories of Indie Rock that are also Prog - no one can deny the influence of Prog on Pure Reasons Revolution or Oceansize for example - with Mew it just isn't that clear or obvious.

Indie does get complex and prog-like without actually being Prog or being influenced by Prog.

One of my favourite CDs at the is Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid - it's a great Art Rock influenced Pop album that contains many of the "ingredients" of Prog and has been tagged New Prog in some articles, but it isn't Prog.

Not commonly accepted as Prog within the Prog scene, and not commonly accepted as a Prog Band in the general music scene either. The Prog reference is for And The Glass Handed Kites only, with a list of non-Prog references attached and usually by reviewers who by their own admission don't listen to a lot of Prog and don't particularly like it: "Denmark’s Mew is prog as hell, but don’t hold that against them." ~ greg0rb (Punknews, org) - is not an uncommon sentiment in those reviews.

The problem I have with putting them into Prog Related is: "Related to who? Related to what?" - the raison d'etre of PR is for bands that are clearly related to Prog in some direct way.

Oi, when they release a 100% Prog album AngryWink

ps: I'm very interested in Dream Pop, Baroque Pop and New Prog/Nu Prog/Alt Prog - there are several threads on New Prog already open - if you want to discuss them further, please find one of them to continue this discussion.

Ignoring the fact that the thread was in the wrong section, and that the original proposal is hardly full of compelling evidence, I have to agree that they would probably be worthy of addition.

This is the 11th Mew thread since the release of And The Glass Handed Kites in 2005 and they have yet to be included. I'm sure they will, in either Crossover or Prog Related, but we (Xover) have decided to wait for the imminent new Mew album to be sure.

Well at least the 11th Mew thread proves that there is an interest from more than one person to have Mew added to PAThumbs Up. It´s hard to determine wether or not a borderline case like Mew should be included, so like it was concluded in the last thread which was a thread that I started,  We´ll just have to wait for that new album. I´ll be following how it ends with great interestSmile.

Should it matter? If the outside world defines it as progressive, would we be the "ultimate prog rock resource" if such definitions go unnoticed and ignored?

It doesn't matter in the slightest - but a blanket and unsubstantiated claim requires clarification if it is to be used as a valid argument for inclusion. If all the sites in the world except those that specialise in Prog say they are progressive, then the statement carries less weight than if all the specialist Prog sites say they are progressive and no one else does - but it does not mean we ignore those opinions - as the continuing discussion, evaluation and inclusions of several "New Prog" bands over the past few years would confirm.

Add me to the list of Mew-lovers Smile

I think they're at least worthy of being added to Prog-Related... we shall see what the next album brings.
