But eh... how come nobody has yet mentioned Anathema? Their (fantastic!) Alternative 4 album surely deserves a mentioning.

Oh yes, I totally agree! Anathema came first on my mind. Then Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Arachnoid, Henry Cow, Maudlin Of The Well, Kayo Dot etc, etc...
