Fates Warning definitely stands as one of my favorite bands, and I especially enjoy Disconnected, Perfect Symmetry and Parallels (whom I all consider as great introductions to the band as well). I would also point out that Mark Zonder is one of the most unique and creative drummers I know of, and manages to push the band even further!

Me too, maybe they are heavy metal rather than progressive metal albums but well, I am a metal fan anyway so that was not a consideration, I liked those albums a lot more, in fact they rank among my all time favourite heavy metal albums, the later albums always came across as sounding too "friendly" to me and I have never been able to shake that feeling off, as a result never really got anywhere with them either.

I like this band a lot, but would give nothing over 4 stars, I think. Everything between 3-4. I have almost all the albums.

i would recommend parallels, or pleasant shade of gray. You could also really enjoy the live album still life, it you want something heavier, awaken the guardian is a classic, with quite a different sound

Call me crazy, but I prefer the John Arch era stuff. The Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian were excellent (although I admit the lyrics could be iffy at times).

Perfect Symmetry, Parallels and Inside Out are three of my favorite progressive metal albums. The first one pretty groundbreaking while the two latter holds some of the most beautiful and emotional music I´ve ever heard ( Especially Parallels). |

I like them a lot but haven't really been able to consider them great. I love what Jim Matheos has done with OSI to death though.
