I have an interesting question. The 1972 ELP album Pictures At An Exhibition was recorded before ELP's first album at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. However, on the very beginning of the album, you hear the band announce to the crown that they are going to play Pictures at An Exhibition, and the crowd goes crazy. How did the crowd know about this piece? There's no way every audience member was classically trained, so not everyone there knew about Mussorgsky's work. So obviously somehow they knew about this work. But how?

It's amazing what liquor and drugs can do to a person at a rock festival.

Pictures had been recorded live on film on 9th dec 1970 in front of a audience at the london lyceum for general release..The album itself which was recorded at newcastle city hall 26th march 1971 & initiall released thereafter would have given fans plenty of time to know the work as it was also  part of there gig routene anyway  before album release or recording from newcastle infact.

i don't know where you got 1972 ffrom thats Trilogy

I'm sorry but you cant go by a US date..even though it makes all the explination rather difficult

November 1971 is the correct UK original release date for pictures

I'm just saying, the release date, it doesn't have to do with anything. I'm just curious as to how the crowd knew about the work in 1970 at the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight was ELP's second gig.  As Karny said... The Pictures album was not recorded before that gig.

Aug. 23, 1970 - Plymouth Guildhall, Plymouth UK - (parts of Pictures performed)

Aug. 29, 1970 - Isle of Wight concert (parts of PAAE were performed)

Dec. 9, 1970 - Lyceum Ballroom (PAAE performed and movie filmed)

Mar.28, 1971 - City Hall in Newcastle, UK gig (album recorded) and released on Jan. 4, 1972

Just as a matter of intrest even though Pictures was released after Tarkus' it was infact recorded before but was not considered a second release due to it not entirly their own work but was later released due to demand & if i recall it was at some stage given away free with the Tarkus album.

This Yes fan knows that pictures was released in the UK during November '71 for £1.49 , or at least that's what the sleeve of my latest remastered copy states
