Topic: Best Dave Cousins (Strawbs) vocal 1971-1975 Posted: April 28 2009 at 12:38 |
1971-1975 is generally regarded as Strawbs classic period. Dave Cousins has always been the principal singer. Which song from this period do you think contains his best vocals. I included "Blue Angel" from his 1972 solo album. If you choose other, tell us which song!

Benedictus is, and always will be, one of the truly great moments in prog.
Dave Cousins gives some great vocal performances but 2 really stand out - Benedictus and The Hangman and the Papist. Benedictus shades it for me.

New World.
Absolutely, unbelievably, great song, stunningly powerful lyrics, beautifully sung.
Guess which I voted for.

for me, Benedictus was the portal to progressive rock, and it defined beautiful music to me, so beauty has always been an important part of my favourite prog.

I prefer Cousins' more understated work. The remarkable So Shall Our Love Die, from the generally not-that-great Nomadness, pulls the most strings for me!

To me, Blue Angel. Somehow, Dave manages to handle three different voices... powerfully sung in the hymnic refrains, the middle part with the Cat-Stevens-like intimately sounding whispers and like Peter Gabriel in the other verses.

Good choices Ken. For the sheer drama of the song, for me it's "Hangman and the papist".

Regardless of my praetorian guard avatar (Roxy babes) , my fave record all-time is Hero & Heroine , a genius album that has no weak moment on it, fabulous sound and in my opinion a slew of Cousins' finest work . I agree with Senor Munoz that the whole enchilada is plainly amazing. In my grave this album is going!

Saw the Acoustic Strawbs at a small rural pub a couple of years ago and Dave Cousins still has it
Grave New World was my favourite for years - a prog-folk classic but Burstin at the Seams takes some beating
