This avant-fusion giant deserves a place in PA ...having worked with artists such as Daevid Allen (New York Gong), Material, Herbie Hancock (Future Shock), Brian Eno & David Byrne (My Life in the Bush of Ghosts), Fred Frith (Massacre), John Zorn (Painkiller), Fela Kuti (Army Arrangement), Ginger Baker (Middle Passage), Peter Brotzmann (Last Exit), Bootsy Collins & Buckethead (Praxis), & many, many others, Bill Laswell is worthy of a spot in our most illustrious archives.

Seconded.  He's been all over the place and is an excellent bassist.  If you haven't checked out Arcana - Arc Of The Testimony, you should.  I think you'll like it.

Yeah, but where to put him? I've discovered Laswell through the electronic scene, only to later read about the rest of styles/projects/"identities".

He's quite the man with a thousand faces.

Didn't he collab with Schulze on like 10 albums?

Let's say he's in the Avant-Prog section, just as others uncategorizables like the Residents, Zappa or Frith.

I pretty much think we'll have to cut deep into the collaborations section.

So what's Bill's main solo output.

Laswell's solo work is all over the place where genre is concerned, but I particularly love the jazziness of Invisible Design.

He is mailny known for his work with Material (e.g. Hallucination Engine), Praxis (e.g. Transmutation), & Tabla Beat Science (e.g. Tala Matrix).

Please provide what you think is the best example of Laswell's work that would fit avant-prog.  I'll repost it in the team thread and we can re-visit.  Laswell has been brought up before and has been somewhat of a question mark.

Praxis, Massacre, Last Exit , & Painkiller are, IMO, Laswell's most avant projects.

I included several links to Praxis' music in the Praxis suggestion thread I started a while back.

Massacre, Laswell's project with Henry Cow's Fred Frith, is already included in the archives.

Last Exit & Painkiller, OTOH, can be heard at last.fm.

My favorite Laswell, project, Arcana, fits best into jazz rock fusion, I think.  But I leave it to the Captain to make his case, when an artist is all over the place it's rather difficult.

Material too ...have you heard Hallucination Engine? ...it's a fusion masterpiece! Approve

If you're at all a fan of Weather Report & other world-influenced fusion acts then you'd be doing yourself an incredible disservice to miss that one!

Hallucination Engine is a great record, so is Speak No Evil, both are very somber, almost religious in a way.

Well, I know Henry Plainview has been pushing for Last Exit to be included.  Problem is these seem to be separate bands that would have to be evaluated by themselves (e.g. Massacre already in the archives); how does one separate Laswell "solo" from these collaborative works?

No artist on this site has every album they played on listed in their discography. If added, Laswell would be no different. All the laswell albums would be on (duh), and I guess the different joint ventures that feature his name would be considered one by one.

Seperate band names in which Laswell was a member should not be added under his name.
