I'll say A Nightmare To Remember, followed by The Best of Times.  Last for me would be Right Of Passage.

Why is the Count of Tuscany winning? Oh that's right, people will say an epic is the best because it's long, no matter how good the song is.

I voted "The Best Of Times", which between it, "The Shattered Fortress", and "Nightmare to remember" are easily the best on the album. And I have to say I haven't heard a tune as cheery as that one by DT since Six Degrees.

I'm afraid it's my least favorite. It will surely have some connection to the past (12 step saga) but to me it's just a cheap way to write another song. It's highly unoriginal.
My vote is for The Best of Times followed by the Count of Tuscany (except for the lyrics)

The best song for me is The Count of Tuscany but I'm not really sure because of A nightmare to Remember. They're both epics Confused

I confidently gave BC&SL 5 stars (here's my review- http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=224039), so everything is great on that album (in my opinion at least).

The Shattered Fortress
is great in context with the other songs in the AA suite, but as one song it's probably The Count of Tuscany or The Best of Times.

Here's how I'd rate each song...

1. The Count of Tuscany- 5/5
2. The Best of Times- 5/5
3. The Shattered Fortress- 5/5
4. A Nightmare to Remember- 4.5/5
5. A Rite of Passage- 4/5
6. Wither- 4/5

This equals out to 27.5/30 which is 4.583/5 (sorry I had to unleash my inner math nerdBig smile)

I'm not going to vote just yet, as I have not heard the album enough yet.  However, suffice to say it sounds terrific.

Nightmare To Remember and Shattered Fortress stand out so far, whilst I also particularly love the instrumental section of A Rite Of Passage.  DT were phenomenal when I saw them on their recent UK tour and I will be seeing them again in October too Approve.

Oh incidentally, I too am sick of the DT-bashing.  Why don't they just start up a DT-bashing thread and leave us to constructive discussion.  I've not got a problem with constructive criticism but as for this "DT suck" thing...... well I'll say no more.

I completely agree Clap.  If the poll were entitled "do you like or hate DT?", some bashing would be expected!

Going back to BC&SL, I listened to it again earlier and I've got to say now, after a few listens,  A Nightmare To Remember is actually as good as The Shattered Fortress.  Still glad I voted for the latter though, as TSF's got less votes.

Went with Nightmare because, while Count is one of the best epics they've written (and might be my favorite DT epic of all time), I expect it to get plenty of votes from others.

I for one agree with you.Thumbs Up

Can I vote for Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lilly of the Valley?
Seriously, I haven't given it enough listens yet, definitely between Nightmare/Best of Times/Count.

I made the mistake of pcking up The Dave Matthews Band's new one at the same time, and that's been getting the most spins.

I think the album is the best since SFAM but it's not perfect.

The order of songs in my opinion, starting with the best:

1. A Nightmare to remember  StarStarStarStarStar (best song since root of all evil and best long song since 6DOIT)
2. The Shattered Fortress StarStarStarStar1/2 (second best in the alcohol series after root of all evil)
3.The count of tuscany StarStarStarStar (it overstays its welcome - about 4 minutes too long)
4. A rite of Passage StarStarStarStar (such a great chorus)
5. The best of times StarStarStar1/2
6. WitherStarStarStar (decent and enjoyable but nothing up to the rest's standards)

^ I kind of agree with Moving Pictures on this one.

It's not that a negative opinion on the CD or the band is instantly dismissed.  There are 25 threads in the other forums that are chock full of much the same arguments.  This is supposed to be a Poll, "Favorite Track on Dream Theater's BC & SL".  The Dream Theater bashing is defiantly off topic for this thread.

With that being said, I'm going to give the first vote for "A Rite of Passage".  "The Count of Tuscany" is great, but the lyrics detract from the music.  "A Nightmare to Remember" has the most beautiful bit, but again, the lyrics stand out and the remainder of the song isn't as good as the middle.

I don't know if "A Rite of Passage" has lyrics that are as bad as the other two, they simply don't draw enough attention to themselves to become a mark against the song.  In addition, it's the song that I find gets stuck in my head most from this album.  Very catchy chorus.

Dream Theater have watered down their music A LOT over the course of the years in my opinion.
I honestly feel none of these songs deserve an honorable mention anywhere.
And that's coming from someone who loves SFAM, Awake, SDOIT & a little of ToT!

They composed some excellent stuff but now they just can't anymore.
All of their stuff is very weak and I think a lot of people will agree with me.
Of course there are newcomers who will say it's good, but I don't think their opinion will last for a long time.

This is so full of fail.

If you want to bash DT, go do it somewhere else. I'm sick of hearing it.

I actually think he's right (although I haven't heard their latest, so that applies jut to Octavarium and Systematic Chaos). But what I'm also sick of is when some opinions are instantly dismissed as bashing. You either love a band or you're an idiotic ignorant who couldn't tell good music if it bit his ass (in the good words of Frank Zappa). Whatever happened to moderate opinions? As long as they're argued correctly, I don't mind seeing them. I actually think this is the whole point of having a forum. If we all agree that band X is so great, what are even doing discussing their music here?

Like others, I also think DT have reached their creative pinnacle some time ago and have been on a descending trend since (their popularity pinnacle however is somewhat of a different issue). Still, I have become rather interested in hearing their newest output, at least for the fact that their artwork reminds me of Awake.

The Count of Tuscany has the most good parts in it, it's cheesy like the rest but who gives... A Nightmare to Remember might have like one redeeming part... The Best of Times is Mike Portnoy trying to do Neal Morse and inevitably failing, I can't blame him for trying though. :P The beginning of A Rite of Passage is good then it dies immediately... The Shattered Fortress, that one catchy riff...

This is honestly the best way to describe this album for me, DT pulling of a few good parts in between the sh*tstorm of mediocrity... I wouldn't be pissed off at most bands for sucking, they actually do suck, DT are f**king great though, and yet they suck now... and don't give me the, "they're making the music they want to make, don't listen if you blah blah" crap... I'll complain if a great band is spiraling into complacent, cliche, trendy, wannabe tough guy metal... except in epic songform to carry on their image of being "prog". DT can do better, more musical, more original.

It's a tie between "The Count of Tuscany" and "The Best of Times" for me.
