here's a little question for those of a certain age (primarily in the UK, admittedly)...

Certain allegations have been made against a certain famous figure from the 1970's who died last year; these allegations are coming thick & fast, are currently under investigation, yet nobody seems to be saying "innocent until proven guilty", or "it's a shame he's not here to answer the accusations"... everyone seems to assume the guilt is self-evident and a certain broadcasting corporation's attitude seems to be "oh well, it was bound to come out sooner or later, now let's see who is to blame, who knew about it, who covered it up & who else was involved"

Admittedly, I always thought there was something a tad dodgy about said personality, but the sheer quantity of cases now being investigated is staggering.

IF this person was guilty of said offenses, how the hell did he get away with it for so long...?

^I honestly do not believe every accusation. But at the core I am sure a few are true. Having said that I was never a fan of this person anyway. And I'm not surprised at these accusations either. But I have heard people say "innocent until proved.." etc  etc

I have heard (ie hearsay, but sort of reliable, but let's use the HIGNFY "allegedly" just to be safe) that allegedly young female staff in a hotel he frequented were told to keep well away from him - it does seem that his beahvior was common-knowledge wherever he went. Charity and good-works seem to have been used as an excuse to turn a blind eye here, and that (if true) is outrageous.
Quote Gambaccini went on: “On another occasion, and this cuts to the chase of the whole matter, he was called and he said 'well you could run that story, but if you do there goes the funds that come in to Stoke Mandeville - do you want to be responsible for the drying up of the charity donations'. And they backed down.”

As some may be aware, I'm not a great fan of charities, here is an example why: I read in the Indie today that one of his charities with assets of £3.5M earnt £130K from that and spent £25K in administration fees paying out £30K in charitable activities - so only 23% of the income gets paid out as charity. So while there are claims of raising X, Y & Z for noble causes - how much of that reached the noble cause and was that worth the cost?

There is no smoke without fire and some of the accusations may not be true but if only one of the cases is true then that is enough - there is no acceptable minimum number.
What?

Something else which occurred to me was that if such an accusation were made against a member of my family, I may have the headstone removed to a safe place until investigations were complete, thus (a) protecting the headstone from vandalism & (b) preserving the peace of a cemetery & preventing it from becoming a focus of unwanted attention, but what I wouldn't do is destroy the headstone completely...

...unless I knew something

Yes, I did wonder why they had it sent to landfill. Why not just store it away somewhere?

After all this time, it's traditional that I maintain the hatred ; nowadays, I just look on it as an idiots guide for how not to write/record a prog rock epic

We tried various positions - round the back, on the side, up against a wall...but in the end we came to the conclusion that the bottom of the garden was the only place for a really good shed.

Ermm Why didn't we think of this...
