For some reason I decided to look at the albums charts and wondered if any proggers keep update with the modern mainstream or even like the bands featured in the charts.
How many do you know from the top 30? Also do you feel out of touch with what's going on musically or happily ignorant? http://theofficialcharts.com/top40_albums.php I know 17 of the featured artists but as I watch television your quite usually force fed these albums but strangely I also feel out of touch of modern music. But if its anything like this it seems like no loss to me. There are only 8 artists in that lists from which I got to listen to at least one full album. There are more that I know and many others whose names I know but I've doubt ever listening to them as I don't watch MTV/own a Tv since almost a decade (for example Rihanna or whatever that's spelled).

I would consider myself very up to date on music. edit: this is counting only albums that I have heard. Edited by The Antique - August 25 2009 at 21:24 |

Is this about whether we have heard their name or whether we have heard their music? Because if it is hearing them I have heard next to nothing on that list, except some songs from the Guns N' Roses album, otherwise I'm completely out of touch.

I have heard a full album from none of those.
I have heard of about 4 (of the top 30). |

I know of most of them, then everybody on the planet has heard of Michael Jackson, Bouncey and U2; half the planet must have at least heard of Coldplay, Emimem, The Killers, Stone Roses, Green Day, Lily Allen, Prodigy, Lady Gaga, Kasabian, Pink... unless you are living in a bubble... on a tiny atol in the mid Pacific Ocean.... without a Baylis wind-up radio.
I own albums by 6 artists in the top 30 (I don't have the latest by Prodigy or U2 but I thave older stuff by them). I own 4 of the albums actually in the top 30 at the moment, my daughter owns 2 more and my wife has 1 - so 7 of those albums exist in my house.
I don't consider myself to be "up to date" at all -

I've actually heard music from around 32 artists on the list (there's probably some error there though, I didn't want to double cound and may have accidently double-counted/omitted some). Unfortunately, a lot weren't by choice.

I knew of 47 of the artists in the top 100 albums, but that's including Jacko, U2, Coldplay, Killers etc.. and all the artists I would think we've all heard of.
Am I in touch with what artists such as Kanye West are up to? No. Do I care..? Not really. |

I know of 22 artists on that list. Most of the top thirty are hiphop and pop stuff... Not my cup of tea.

I did not check but would not be surprised if I did not know any of them. if there is anything I am definitely NOT interested in it is the charts

Can we say that all these bands/artists are being promoted (advettisng, radio promotion) at great expense by the big machine called the record industry?

I've heard of most of them, but that's largely because they are either worldwide known names like Michael Jackson or Abba, or because other people in my house like them or own their music (Beyonce, Duffy, Lily Allen)
I think the only one that I 've listened to all through would be Kings of Leon, which is actually a decent CD (don't hate me for saying that ) Never even heard of Calvin Harris or Tinchy Styrder, but I'm seriously not in the least bothered. 'The charts' mean nothing to me, and haven't since I was about 14 years old |

I've heard a number of those names, but the only one I'm more familiar with is Green Day, and I certainly enjoy that album. But otherwise: sorry, a few snatches of the songs here and there, but that's all.
Strangely enough, I don't think my approach to chart music has changed since the early '70s, so I wasn't in touch then just as I'm not now.

i have albums by a few of them, Lily Allen , Stereophonics, Guns'n'Roses, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Eric Clapton, Police, Jimi Hendrix ( ), Blur....
don't know many of the others though, except maybe some geezer called Michael who recently snuffed it, that should boost his flagging record sales but still won't be around in 40 years like Jimi..

Anyway, I think it's the chart listeners that are out of touch, and not us.

right at 15 but i wish that it were 1 (guess Hendrix is on there)
might be a few more whose names i've heard but music i haven't
the biggest shock of the list was A-Ha by the way, what's an 80s 1 hit wonder doing on an album chart in 2009? I guess Take On Me was somewhat catchy but that came out 24 years ago. Edited by manofmystery - August 30 2009 at 22:45 |

I was not too surpised that I knew 21 of the names, especially having teenage kids. However, i was surpised to have 4 of them

I 'know' about two thirds of them.
It's great to see Elbow and Fleet Foxes in there as I am a big fan. |

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb. |
