Well, one can play anything he wants, and another can play anything she wants.

This is pure flash vs. subtlety (or not so subtle, in some cases).

Just wonderin'.  I'll provide the first vote.

Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

I'm with you - Rudess doesn't entertain me whatsoever.

Although I do appreciate the distinction between a 'widdley widdley' merchant and a soloist who communicates more with less notes, isn't Prog kinda tied into the flashy bombastic thang y'all ? I mean ain't kitschy showmanship part of it's appeal ?

Who doesn't like spinning pianos, knife and flame-throwers ?

Oh, and they've got to wear a sparkly suit of some sort

Having heard and been entertained by Messrs Wakeman, Argent, Lord and Emerson et al for a very long period of time it certainly ain't prejudice on my part (try post judice)

Prog never was, is not and never will be ART, it's ENTERTAINMENT - larger than life, a distraction from the travails of the real world, rock'n'roll chutzpah, a healthy imaginary realm and (at a pinch) thinking man's razzmatazz. I love it for all these reasons and even a casual glance through the history of the genre's so called golden age circa '69 to '76 confirms my description of same not as stereotyping but an acknowledgement that despite your heartfelt wishes, Prog pretensions of substance, depth and profundity wither in the harsh glare of the footlights.

It's Only Rock'n'Roll (but you don't like that)

Flasness and subtlety need not be mutually exclusive of course...

For my ears I like a bit of both I guess. I dont really care how complex something is, as long as it sounds good to me in some way. The contribution that Richard Wright made to Floyds music, can hardly be described as 'flash' but it was very effective. Mike Pinders mellotron work with the Moody blues, ditto. Sometimes a good chord progression or a well placed change of key is what makes the music, rather than 300 notes per second, but it's a matter of taste and 'flashy' playing can add great excitement to a piece. Prog rock is all about variety, and there is something in that enormous musical garden for all moods and tastes. Sometimes one band can capture all those things. I think Yes are a good example of this. Listen to Wakemens piano at the start of 'Awaken' flashy, tough it may be, it is also atmospheric and 'subtle'

Ruddess has a share of substantial keyboard themes/riffs and orchestration. I know he does mindless over-the-top solos/riffs sometimes but still ...

The best parts are the mindless over the top ones to me!  Not only is that where the fun is but also the possibilities and explorations.

I havent heard the other Keyboard player in this poll "Jenny Conlee" but I like substance over flash, however it wouldn't show that I have much "substance" if I voted for somebody I dont  think I have heard .. no vote Ermm
