Why does my taste makes you sad?
I don't like most Prog Metal....But find Symmphony X amazing.

Oh no I don't have a problem with your taste, just "there's hope for prog metal" kind of makes us prog-metallers feel like a low life  Ah, whatever. We're the newest subgenre here (either us or post rock), so I guess I understand. -Jeff

Like to ad The Firebird Suite, the epic that got me into Stravinsky. He may not be Prog related, but prog relates a lot to him.

A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (VdGG) – introduced me to VdGG, and that truly changed my life!

1) Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
Probably the very first prog epic that I ever listened to. Opened me up to the idea of massively long rock songs not being boring. Up until then, I could hardly stand beyond 5-6 minutes in a song.
2) The Willing Well (suite) - Coheed & Cambria
Contains one of my favorite strecthes of music on an album ever. Parts II and III take prog complexity, pop sensibility, and the raw emotion that can only be delivered by an epic story and roll it into one amazing epic.
3) Echoes - Pink Floyd
My first time ever being put into a trance by music. I seriously thought this was the greatest piece of music ever created for a good amount of time.
4) The Revealing Science Of God (Dance Of The Dawn) - Yes
My first taste of truly epic Yes material. Never had I heard music this beautiful before.
5) Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd
Certainly not one of my favorites, but really opened up the world of "weird" music to me.
6) The End Complete - Coheed & Cambria
Another Coheed suite. The climax to one of my favorite stories, the Amory Wars.
7) Close To The Edge - Yes
Helped me get further into Yes' more daring songs. Oh, and it only one of the top 10 compositions in rock history.
8) Karn Evil 9 - Emerson, Lake, And Palmer
Helped further my interest in prog and made me realize how much I loved keyboards as a lead instrument.
9) Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
Knew I could get into the folk-sy side of prog.
10) The Gates Of the Delirium - Yes
The first 13 minutes = the greatest 13 minutes of music ever put to tape. Knocks me on my ass every time I listen to it.

As most have said, I'll say:
1. SUPPER'S READY - GENESIS
Helped me really get into old Genesis, and older prog in general. Until then, I only knew Genesis from "Invisible Touch" and other such tunes. How did I ever survive?
and for the other 9:
2. A CHANGE OF SEASONS - DREAM THEATER
My "favorite song" for a long while. This is indeed an EPIC piece of music, my favorite from these incredibly gifed musicians.
3. ANESTHETIZE - PORCUPINE TREE
Simplicity meets complication in my favorite Porcupine Tree song. I love this whole album, actually.
4. CLOSE TO THE EDGE - YES
I listened to this growing up, before I had any inkling of what "Prog Music" was. Probably responsible for my taste to some extent.
5. CYGNUS X-1 (BOOKS ONE AND/OR TWO) - RUSH
Another favorite work from a favorite band of mine. This blows 2112 out of the water, in my opinion.
6. ABBEY ROAD MEDLEY - THE BEATLES
My VERY first exposure to Prog. I was maybe 4 years old? An all-time great. The Beatles are one of the few bands that I can actually claim "changed my life"
7. STARLESS - KING CRIMSON
A fantastic, fantastic song. Opened me up to King Crimson, and in turn, a lot of bands that they influenced. Very epic indeed.
8. THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON - PINK FLOYD
An album that I consider one cohesive work, this is an important album for me, musically and sentimentally. Really another one that "opened up the heavens" at an early age.
9. THE SKYE - MASTODON
An unorthodox choice here, one that is likely to surprise. But I think this, too, should be treated as one work. It is epic in its proportions, epic in its sounds, and has some pretty "epic" riffs in there too. I really like this album more than I probably should.
10. SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE - DREAM THEATER
Finally, a work that introduced me to Dream Theater, another band (in fact probably THE band) that introduced me to Prog. Very important to me, but I can't say I like it much nowadays compared to other DT.

2Cometa Rossa - Area (Simply how a song have to be made, and the song which i discover Demetrio Stratos, today my favourite singer)
3 L'evoluzione - BMS (i've been catched by his rhytm and their words and the way to play of Vittorio Nocenzi)
4 Proclamation - Gentle Giant (just wow!)
5 Magma - Mekkanik Kommando (when i heard first time i said "What the #### is this thing", but listening and listening again i discovered a new world, the zeuhl one)
6 21st century schizoid man - King Crimson (Madness, Frenzy, Insanity, non canonical, fast and addicting... just like me)
7 Fettim Palliu - Koenji Hyakkei (Immense...)
8 6.00 - Dream Theater (I loved this song, dream theater opened me the street which im walking today at 13 years... i had a band too similar to dream theater but play and hear their song every day forced me to hate them, expecially for their last cd. Sorry but i don't like it XD)
9 Pholas Dactylus - Il concerto delle menti (So strange, so different...)
10 Potemkine - Tango Panache (Love at first view! i heard it from you tube and immidiatley serch for them everywhere. Then i came on Ebay and brought the CD containing the song from you tube, Nicolas II)

A Tab In The Ocean by Nektar. This was the first prog epic I ever heard and it was the first time I could understand what progressing rock music meant. The powerful sound of the Hammond grabbed me. I was on the no-return path. Mind-blowing!
After that I came back to my favourite band and now, having known prog, I could better understand why they are great. Led Zeppelin's live version of No Quarter, 22 minutes long, played at Earl's Court in 1975 and never released, is one of my dearest pieces of music ever. A lost masterpiece of progressive rock.
My second initiation into prog, Pink Floyd's Echoes, as played on Live in Pompeii, is the thing which set on "prog mode" forever.
There are many other epics I like but none have had this kind of impact in my life.
