Is anyone here from ex-Yu countries? I am from Slovenia, and lately I've thrown myself into the history of prog rock and jazz fusion music on our grounds. There are many great bands not only from Slovenia, but Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia...
There aren't many bands from Slovenia in Progarchives, so I'll try to name those most important:

Begnagrad - Rock in opposition, also influenced by klezmer and jazz fusion; most known them by a member Bibič - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTfTgjXXV0Q

Buldožer - Best and most famous prog rock band from Slovenia, really great music; maybe you know them by the Pink Floyd  "cover" - Another Freak in the Hall - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vnYsrDPexM

Na lepem prijazni - prog rock band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrSVPYHKnjs

Quatebriga - jazz fusion band, great guitarist Leonardi, great music

September - another jazz fusion band, the best one from Slovenia; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OqpHbg4WMY&feature=related

Predmestje - yet another jazz fusion band (yes, there are many great jazz-rock-fusion bands in Slovenia); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOQBbmth9sk

Izvir - jazz fusion band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScNIFtoUsKg

Feedback - jazz fusion band, quite young - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=080KpmqNuUE

Miusow Quartet - most hyped (as much as it can be, since that kind of music isn't really popular in Slovenia) jazz fusion band right now

Elevators - ANOTHER jazz fusion band, with Jani Hace on the bass (best Slovenian bassist, also a member of a most famous Slovenian band Siddharta) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbfMHE-DmpA

That's it for now, I will update this post. Cheers!

From that area I have the great album of Vlatko Stefanovski & Miroslav Tadic's "Live in Beograd" (had not yet managed to review this giant), and majority of the dark and dreamy Sedmina albums, which are really fine.

I know one PA collab who is very educated in this scene... Smile

Hello, and welcome to PA. For start you may want to check this old thread:

It covers both Yugoslav and East-European scene, but mostly ex Yugo bands are mentioned. Wink

Begnagrad - Rock in opposition, also influenced by klezmer and jazz fusion; most known them by a member Bibič - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTfTgjXXV0Q Excellent band, already here!

Buldožer - Best and most famous prog rock band from Slovenia, really great music; maybe you know them by the Pink Floyd  "cover" - Another Freak in the Hall - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vnYsrDPexM Perhaps the most avant-guard and important ex Yugo band ever. Already included here.

Na lepem prijazni - prog rock band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrSVPYHKnjs Not yet included but I have them on my "to add" list...

Quatebriga - jazz fusion band, great guitarist Leonardi, great music Good, similar to Begnagrad but more jazzy, already included here.

September - another jazz fusion band, the best one from Slovenia; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OqpHbg4WMY&feature=related Very good old 1970s jazz funk fusion. Already included here.

Predmestje - yet another jazz fusion band (yes, there are many great jazz-rock-fusion bands in Slovenia); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOQBbmth9sk Already included here, nice fusion.

Izvir - jazz fusion band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScNIFtoUsKg Hmmm, obscure masterpiece, one of the rarest albums ever issued in Yugoslavia, music is fantastic, included here already.

Feedback - jazz fusion band, quite young - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=080KpmqNuUE Not known to me.

Miusow Quartet - most hyped (as much as it can be, since that kind of music isn't really popular in Slovenia) jazz fusion band right now Unknown to me

Elevators - ANOTHER jazz fusion band, with Jani Hace on the bass (best Slovenian bassist, also a member of a most famous Slovenian band Siddharta) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbfMHE-DmpA Unknown to me

That's it for now, I will update this post. Cheers!

Thanks for your post, very useful. I am mostly concerned with old Yugoslav scene (including Slovenia) up to 1990, so if you know some post-YU new bands feel free to discuss and suggest their addition to the respective genre teams. I am not very familiar with recent post-YU music especially those from other exYU republics ( I live in Bosnia).

Enjoy! Big smile

One of the newer prog rock bands in Slovenia is Moonlight Sky, and a very good one, if I might add - check out this song -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz2DuBmnxK8 .
Also, Demolition Group is a prog rock band of some sorts - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o85lj_3jotE (don't mind the video)
Then, we have Salamandra Salamandra, experimental progressive ethno mambogambo rock - http://www.myspace.com/salamandrasalamandra
Goran Utan band is also an evolving prog rock project, hope it succeeds, it really has a potential - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0FWtHfwROA , http://www.myspace.com/goranutanband

That would be it for now, more to come (read: when I discover more bands =)).

I am personally mostly interested in the old Yugoslav music scene, during the period of existence of SFR Yugoslavia as a country up until about 1990.

I don't actively follow what has been happening in other exYU countries music scenes since early 1990s (I even don't follow much of recent music in Bosnia where I live) , but of course you are more than welcome to submit interesting bands for evaluation here. For info, you already have separate countries for former republics of SFRY:

Cheers! Smile

Hi everyone! I'm from Rijeka. Glad to see you allHug

I'm currently doing a little research. I don't know much about modern prog rock , but judging by the internet searches, it seems there's plenty of prog metal in Serbia and Bosnia, post-rock in Croatia, avantgarde and fusion in Slovenia...and of course folk rock fusion in Macedonia! Hopefully they'll all be introduced  here on Prog Archives one day..

The bad thing is - it's a common thing in Croatia, and I guess everywhere else too - young prog bands doesn't have much chance on releasing an album, so most of them are splitting up, discouraged, before releasing any material...

Are there any good young, un-established bands around in your area? What's going on in Ljubljana, Skopje, Belgrade, Novi Sad (hell, I don't even know what's going on in Zagreb)...? Just to to be sure not to miss a good band if they do a concert nearby!

A good ole Kornelije Kovac was added here:

As a member of INDEXI and founder of KORNI GRUPA, he was a pioneer of progressive rock in exYU, although his solo works are perhaps not too interesting, hence he goes under "prog-related" only.

clarke2001, check my posts, most of those bands are well-established. Buldožer is up and running again, and the youngsters of Moonlight Sky are breaking through (since now they've recorded one demo and two albums; their 2009 album is considered as one of the greatest in Slovenian prog rock history).

Well, that's your opinion =). But I agree, they are both great, I even prefer Korni Grupa to Indexi. I think that ex-yu prog bands are a synonim for quality, really.

Just got the Debut from Moonlight Sky. A true passion to listen to. Sounds a bit like the old proto prog bands. Just love the electric piano solo in "Lunin Svit." The voic is also amazing.
There's also a prog metal band in slovenia called Prospect. To me they don't really sound progressive (too much 4/4Smile), but haven't listened to their music a lot. There' s also the great Lado Jakša, now solo artist, former member of many great prog bands (Sedmina, SONČNA POT(-check it out, amazing!!!!!!!!!!), Buldožer).

"I Am" is ont available for purchase. Can anyone please tell me, how to get I Am or something about that demo? Is it for released tracks or non album tracks? I really want to get more of ther stuff and am interested in buying some more recordings if possible.
