Where would you put these Norwegians? JRF?

http://www.myspace.com/synkoke

Their myspace bio:

SynKoke plays the progjazz Shostakovich dreamed of playing. The band completes the utopian project of Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, but the result carries imprints of the Norwegian culture that gave Motorpsycho its identity. SynKoke is potent, monumental, and ambitious. The language of Olav H. Hauge's poetry is the inspiration of energies and emotions, and the words are dressed in odd meters and Scandinavian mystique. This is music that brings together the urban metropolis and the rural Sognefjord.

SynKoke is about to release their first album, «Hokjønn» (“Female”). The setting of memorable sessions has been Bryggen in Bergen, where an outstanding figure in Norwegian contemporary music, Kato Ådland, has produced a spectacular album. Five years of concerts formed a fruitful ground for an incredibly energetic period of recording.

The musicians in SynKoke have brought with them inspiration from their other bands; Pony the Pirate, Amherst, and The Opium Cartel. Out of rock, classical music and jazz, a sphere of openness is created and the poetry is shouted out in intense frustration. SynKoke is female, she expresses herself freely!

^ Bergen is a nice town Smile. The band plays symphonic prog/ symphonic metal, mixing some avant and few metal fusion elements. Not JFR for sure.

I don't hear symphonic prog or metal there, but traces of fusion. But again, I'm not sure which genre it should be in.

JRF seems a reasonable choice, but what about RIO/Avant? They remind me of similar bands in that category, Shining (N) comes to mind. But a little hard to tell based on those clips on Myspace alone.

MAybe JFR, but the 1st and 3rd pieces from their MySpace had an Avant feel.

I don't think I'd put it in JRF.  It's avant edged with jazz-rock and other elements that make it suitable for an Art Rock sub, and Eclectic would be the Art Rock sub.  So I'll mention it to the Eclectic team (though as notes, it has similarities to ones in Avant, but it also has considerable similarities to various ones in Eclectic.  I'll add it to the Eclectic chart and vote yes (that's three Assaf suggestions I've voted yes for Eclectic in one day -- I do like my Eclectic with an avant and jazz edge).

Thanks Greg

Maybe I should join your team then... LOL

I also added it (and Il Berlione) to the ZART Chart, and asked my team members to vote (I voted yes for both for Avant, so if the others vote as well, we'll discuss it then - the main point is that they get in).

No problem, though I should be working on home renovations.  I enjoy such discussions (the part of the addition process I most enjoy).

Exactly, the main point is something gets in, or at least accepted in reasonably short-order if deemed Prog.  One can fine-tune categories even after acceptance.  I checked your ZART thread before.  Basically what I told Eclectic with Il Berlione is that it's one to consider depending on ZART's decision.  I favour Avant for it, but my yes vote is a "fine" for Eclectic (as opposed to Horrific Child which I favoured for Eclectic but was fine with Avant having).  Often there's a fine line between avant-worthy bands and Eclectic ones because avant music is commonly very eclectic.  Hey, if Avant became a subcategory of Eclectic, you could automatically become a team member. ;) :P

Greg,

They've been cleared for Avant. Does the Eclectic team like to still continue evaluating them anyway and see if they fit? Or can we go ahead and add them in avant?

I would suggest that you go ahead and add it to Avant (I could see it in either category, but it is one that would appeal to avanteers).
