1. Who was the so-called Harvest Records house band and which Harvest Records albums do they appear on?

2. Allan Holdsworth released an album called the  "16 Men of Tain". Who are the "16 Men of Tain"? The art director of that album Mark Gleed,(aka Mark Laurent),  produced, sang and played keyboards on a nearly forgotten but excellent 1986 prog rock album, featuring Allan Holdsworth -  name that album.

3. Who was that Caroline, subject of  Matching Mole's "Oh Caroline", and what was the name of her Canterbury band?

4. Has Holdsworth ever played on record with the following (boots don't count), if so name the album:

a) Ginger Baker

b) Joe Satriani

c) Eddie Van Halen

d) Jerry Goodman

e) Hugh Hopper

f) Robert Wyatt?

6. Is it true:  Robert Wyatt played once with Chicago (Transit Authority)?

7. Who connects Sir Cliff Richard (who has sold the largest numbers of singles to appear in the UK charts)   and Bruford?

and finally the easy one:

8. What made up games connect Robert Wyatt, Nick Mason and Carla Bley?

Damn Dick, You've got about four different trivia threads going on at once.

Didn't Soft Machine record for Harvest?

Question#2. "The Sixteen men of Tain" is printed on the bottom of every bottle of Glenmorangie single malt whiskey. One of Allan's favorite libations. Second half of #2 is "Soma" (darned thing cost me of $30.00). I've heard that the second outing from the same group may be released (the  neverwasneverwillbe project).

Question #4. Allan played with Hugh Hopper on the Soft Works album. I heard a bootleg of Allan kicking Van Halen's arse in a shred-fest, but I don't think they ever recorded anything together. I have nearly everything Allan's played on and I don't recall any of those persons on anything AH played on. Maybe with Donovan?

I'm a complex old s*d - there are two entwined threads.

And in response:

1. quarter of a point & those albums?

2. Mega marks for being smack on  - and I thought the second half would sink everybody. (I got paid for my tiny contribution to the album with two white label vinyl pressings of Soma and a teeshirt!! - but don't tell the taxman). I tried selling "Neverwasneverwillbe" to some British labels by sending them demos on behalf of Mark and got nothing, but I've heard a fair chunk of the record in rough form. It is very good and there is quite a line up of collaborating musicians - last thing I heard is Gnarley Geezer Records might release it......... Which reminds me I have permission to radio play  the first track  and I'm tempted to play it again on my radio show.

4. " I heard a bootleg of Allan kicking Van Halen's arse in a shred-fest" - that's a bonus for me, I've asked the question for which that is the answer several times and never had it confirmed that there is a boot. Hugh Hopper most certainly with Softworks - but not the only one........

And the rest

I thought Gnarly Geezer was over-and-out?

I'm definitely looking forward to Soma 2.

Do you know anything about K-2, a project from Ken Jaquess, bassist for Atlantis? It has Allan on Guitar, Ryo Okumoto on keyboard, Shaun Guerin (RIP) on vocals. It should be released soon on Progrock records:  http://www.progrockrecords.com/artists/view.php?id=21

Satch and Allan played on a Stu Hamm CD: Radio Free Albemuth. I don't remember if it's the same track.

No you've caught me out there - I'll put your question to the Holdsworth freaks and close circle who communicate with Fusenet - are you a member?

The Satriani answer is correct -IMHO Radio Free is probably the worst track both guitarists have played on - although a lot of Level 42 "Guaranteed" comes close for AH (but the problem here is he is mixed so far back you can rarely hear him). Satriani is a great AH fan, and you can find a long interview he made with Holdsworth in one of the US guitar specialist magazines. In passing AH's replacement in Level 42, Jakko is worth following up  - 21st Schizoid Band, and the essential 64 Spoons (check on the compilation CD "Landing On A Rat Column") - made the mistake of forming a jazz rock band at the height the punk period......

I am a forum member at therealallanholdsworth site. Check it out!! Mostly it's a musicians forum, talking scales and modes, amp and devices.... Gets rather boring, but I'm a fan and occassionally Allan will throw out a few posts. He recently posted that his back catalogue is "finally" in his hands and he plans to re-release IOU with a couple of tracks that didn't make it to CD version. He's also planning a "Best of" or retrospective CD and he's asking members for input.

Yes Radio Free Albemuth was a horrible song and Level 42 was another trap for Allan. He wasn't allowed to improvise..... again (UK anyone?). If it weren't for Gary Husband, he would not have been there. Allan did say he would love to record with Sting, if he would ask. That would be killer. I could hear Allan's style merging quite nicely with Sting.

It would be nice, Dick, if you would post a link or something with some of these suggestions. Searching can be a bit time consuming.

Danbo:

URL for Fusenet - but you'll have follow menu to sign up as a member (recommended) for the group - is as follows:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/fusenet/messages

personally you're find the folks there very friendly, rarely get stupidly mad, offer opinions and accept others' opinions. Best of all I have discovered a wealth of excellent albums,  jazz rock and prog, which otherwise I would have completely missed. In fact another best of all, there are many pro musicians who subscribe and occasionally write.

Jakko and 64 Spoons:

http://www.voiceprint.co.uk/voiceprint.php/Catalogue/Artists /6/64%20Spoons

Liquid Note Records (for the amazing Electrocution 250, also some excellent Italian jazz rock from J.A.M.)

http://www.liquidnoterecords.co.uk/

And my home radio station (check the webarchives - all past The Alternative Alternative Show recordings - the jazz chart, etc.)

http://www.lcr1350.co.uk/

If you check on my biog details here, you should find a e.mail address if you want to continue to discuss jazz rock etc outside this forum.....

Finally, have you followed through with the many Holdsworthian guitarists - Alex Machacek's first album "Featuring Ourselves" is a must?

Regards

Dick Heath

PS how did you get the Metal Fatigue cover associated with your correspondence?

Go to Amazon, some of the cover art can be expanded. Copy the URL and paste in the avatar space in your profile.

Thanks for the links.

Perhaps an obvious answer to the question:  but how do you add to your profile?

Click "settings" at the top of this page. The first item in the menu is "edit profile". Go there. It will be the same screen you used when you joined the forum.

Soft Machine, Kevin Ayers'  Joy of a Toy, and Syd Barrett's first album.

Danbo got this all

Carol Grimes, fronted  Canterbury's (rare) blues rock band Delivery.

4. Has Holdsworth ever played on record with the following (boots don't count), if so name the album:

a) Ginger Baker

Yes on Jack Bruce's "Question Of Time", track "Obsession" - my favourite AH solo, oddly in a blues setting - almost say AH deputises for EC with Cream?

b) Joe Satriani

Stu Hamm's Radio Albemuth - possibility the wose thing both guitarists have done

c) Eddie Van Halen

Not on (legitimate) record but certainly appeared on stage together.

d) Jerry Goodman

A cheat - they will be together on Neverwasneverwillbe, if the album gets past post-production

e) Hugh Hopper

Yes, Softworks

f) Robert Wyatt?

Not as far as I can establish

6. Is it true:  Robert Wyatt played once with Chicago (Transit Authority)?

Apparently according to RW's biography

7. Who connects Sir Cliff Richard (who has sold the largest numbers of singles to appear in the UK charts)   and Bruford?

The (unknown) John Clark, a session guitarist who was on a lot of late 70's Richard's albums.

and finally the easy one:

8. What made up games connect Robert Wyatt, Nick Mason and Carla Bley?

Fictitious Sports (released in the UK on Harvest Records), which will was released under Mason's name, but really is Carla Bley album because of various members of her band there - with Wyatt guesting

I should have known that one. Great album and "yes" it is one of my favorite AH solos ever.

Somebody should put an album out of Holdworth's guest appearances on other peoples' albums, that is when he only plays one or two tracks max. on each. Too few  covers of his work to make a similar suggestion  about those (with the exception of Gary Husband's "Things You See", I can only think of three  off hand and two of those are from his catalogue when he played for somebody else ) - "In The Dead Of Night" (Yngwie  Malmsteen), didn't Greg Howe do a cover (but don't see it on the 3 Howe albums I have) and then didn't somebody do a cover of "Protocosmos" or another track from "Believe It", Danbo?

I believe there have been a few, but all pale in comparison. I heard Bruford's Earthworks have released a new "live" CD featuring a few Bruford tunes with horns playing Allan's spots. Could be interesting.

And "YES" to the first part of your last post. A compilation of the "one-offs" would be great. I've made my own. The only discs I'm missing from my collection are a few of those releases. Some aren't available on CD either.

By my last count, I had about 33 releases with Allan playing on at least one track, as well as his solo stuff. I have two copies of the "16MOT."  One Autographed!!!

Funny thing, I've NEVER seen him play "live"...... yet. He doesn't seem to play in northern California. I'm waiting for him to play Yoshi's in Oakland. About two hours from home.
