If forced to make a choice, I'd pick Octopus over all of their other releases.  It's probably the most consistently good album they did.

Free Hand has a bounce to it that makes it a lovely piece throughout. Octopus sounds dated in parts and relies on the inclusion of a classical standard (couldn't name it though) that comes across as soggy and ill-ventured. The latter is probably the most depressing of the good GG albums.

I have an interesting suggestion.  I assume you mean to eventually own both of these anyway.  Why not buy the less recommended one first?  Clearly the consensus is that both are very good.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

you can't really go wrong either way--  that said, as brilliant as Free Hand is, the 'Pus is uniquely wonderful (and has one of my favorite covers ever)

Get them both.  Can't be that expensive.

Both are very good, I like Free Hand just a bit more. Title track, Just the Same, and On Reflection are among GG's very best tracks.
