I've just found this on the Internet; unfortunately it only covers Europe.

here is a relatively comprehensive list of the 2010 avant-garde and free jazz festivals.
as you may see, some program dates have not been announced yet, nor are all the links up-to-date. some refer to last year's event, but it will give you an idea of the kind of music to be expected.

There's also a festival in DC on Sept 24-26, 2010, but I can't find who's playing. Evan Parker, Ned Rothenberg, and Eliott Sharp showed up last year. I'm sad that I missed Evan Parker last year: I saw him on Sunday with Susan Alcorn and Michael Formanek, and he was pretty good, but the other two weren't so much. It would be great to hear him with somebody who was actually famous.

Ha-ha, Really? If you've actually tried, this is like admitting that you're listening abilities are extremely primitive.

Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me

well, I have heard some avant-garde jazz (A Love Supreme, In a Silent Way)
and I have heard some non-avant-garde (early Herbie Hancock, Kind of Blue)

not that different. If you don't tell me, I wouldn't think they're different.

^ Those two albums aren't avant-jazz, even though they were groundbreaking at their times and could be considered "avantgarde" in a literal meaning.

Who told you In A Silent Way was avant-garde? I can understand you getting confused about A Love Supreme because that was important to the development of free jazz and Coltrane's playing, but it isn't that avant-garde itself. Try this later Coltrane and others.

I think the Sergey Kuryokhin festival is one prog fans should possibly keep an eye on. Plus there is nothing so special as to attend a festival in a palace ;) It was inaugurated in NY, then move to its rightful home in St. Petersburg, and is usually held at the Youth Palace. There is also another great avant-Jazz festival in St. Petersburg which is more for home country talents, but the name is escaping me at the moment.

When I'm in Berlin I always find these two websites indispensable:

http://www.jazzwerkstatt-online.de/Konzerte.html

there are some festivals scattered amidst smaller shows.

I wish I lived some place different. And avant jazz sounds nothing like "normal" jazz. Stern Smile
