I'm helping Steve Unruh to get his band here on PA. He also recently asked for reviewing service in appropriate section. And from samples I heard, it's Prog for sure. Maybe not Heavy Prog, Crossover is possibility too. You'll decide. My opinion that they're Prog is based on these two samples. From final part of our conversation, you may find this info helpful:
So common, check them out :-) Edited by Marty McFly - May 21 2010 at 06:29 |

I've been listening to Resistors new album 'Rise' pretty much non-stop for the last few days and its HUGE.
Certainly prog....probably best to qualify them as Heavy prog.
Comon, a site like progarchives cant afford not to feature a band of this quality
Pease include them, I'll promise to write some reviews

Of course, I will also write at least one review. But it looks like Resistor has been suggested before and also rejected. |

But who was it rejected by (was it rejected by both Heavy and Crossover?) Plus there's a new album so I don't know if it was evaluated. I only listened to those two samples, but didn't "feel" it that "prog" (related), but that was just my "feeling". If it were to be in a so-called prog category than I could only see it in Crossover or Heavy Prog (as you suggested as categories, Marty). Sounds primarily like an alternative act to me that's rooted in traditional heavy blues rock but with "progressive" qualities. More of a prog related-sounding act to these ears. Not Prog to me -- sounds pretty standard to me, and long compositions aren't that uncommon outside of prog (not a great deal of development)
Good though, and I expect I should listen to a whole album before mouthing off, but it doesn't strike me as prog or really "progressive". |

Yeah, full album always helps. Steve Unruh sent me his solo album to review (he's here on PA) and along with this also new Resistor album, so I will have unique opportunity to check it. |

Frankly i dont see how you cannot see "Rise' as a prog album. The first album,mwaah...okay. Its more classic retro rock with prog influences but the new album is prog fo sure. Okay, som heavy riffin, jazzy, folky and funky bits....but doesn't the combinaton off all these styles make it prog?
Just because no one plays keys doesn't mean it aint prog!

HeavyProg has a huge backlog at the moment, so don't expect action immediately

The music has heavy moments from time to time indeed, but it's the friendly, accessible quality that defines it IMO. I'll take this to Crossover. Excellent stuff.

Listening right now (over and over again, it's irresistible). Still haven't heard from Steve Unruh, so we should wait for now. I would rather do this with his help. Getting info on this band is quite difficult. And after all, he's the source, frontman, member.

There's a short bio on the bands myspace ( http://www.myspace.com/resistorband)
Resistor was formed rather causally by original members Steve Unruh (Vocalist, Songwriter, and Multi-Instrumentalist), and Rob Winslow (Bass Guitar). As fellow employees, working for a major toy company, the guys spent many a lunch break practicing in a very small studio.
Rob and Steve jammed with a few other musicians for a year or so, before meeting and auditioning Barry Farrands (Drums, Vocals). The chemistry was right from day one! Now could it possibly get any better? Well... the toy company hired another employee, who now sits next to Steve and Rob and happens to be a great guitarist and a great guy! Fran Turner became the player who completed the puzzle! Steve Unruh - Vox, Guitar, Flute, Violin
Barry Farrands - Drums, Vox Fran Turner - Guitar Rob Winslow - Bass Guitar |
