I think they deserve to be added. They were, in my opinion, one of the first prog bands. Any thoughts?

They had more influence on punk and experimental/noise rock than anything. I don't really think they are prog. If they are, than sonic youth and the flaming lips should be added as well.

It's true that they inspired punk in the way that they showed you didn't have to be a great musician to be in a great band, as well as their rebellious attitude, but their style I think leans towards prog, or at least art rock. Just my opinion though, and if you don't consider them prog worthy, that's fine.

I love this band...but no you can't say it should be added to progarchives...this is experimental noisy music, pre punk style...it depends also of your definition of prog.

I agree with VU's greatness and importance, but wouldn't support their inclusion here.
The line between what bands/artists merit inclusion on such a site as the Archives must be drawn somewhere, or the name and original intent of the site becomes meaningless.
On a similar note, too much metal here (no offence to the music, or the musicians - I like a lot of classic metal, and some of the new stuff) will attract too many loutish, rude, opinionated, disfunctional, angry young metal-heads. (Go check out the "dialogue" on some metal forums -- you'll soon see what I mean! When those guys take over, I'm out of here! (I speak from experience -- many of you know to what I'm referring!)
That's my opinion, thanks. Important topic!

Alright, it's official. No VU for this site. I was just listening to Sister Ray when I made that post, and I thought "hey, this is proggy".

Yeah, I often have moments like that with great music, Bryan!
(My word is not official, by any means though -- just one man's considered opinion.)

Two years before... Mr. Rideout predicted the coming of IVANSFR0ST!

But if you're one of the nicest people here... At first I couldn't believe how young you were. What would we do without our favourite Black Metal fan? BTW, I support Peter's opinion 100%. Either we create a section for non-prog bands who have prog elements and/or have influenced prog in some way, or we have to draw a line somewhere. Otherwise the addition of Duran Duran will not be that far off...

You are too nice to me, Raffella, I truly do not deserve this!
Funny how you agreed with Peter 2 years after his post.

Ivan, I've been a teacher for 15 years, and I've seen no shortage of ill-mannered young people (I still see quite a lot of them whenever I go out). You're simply not one of them - apart from having a command of English that I, as a linguist, am simply amazed at. As to replying two years later... well, as the saying goes, better late than never!

VU is a very important and influential band and/but even if there are evident minimalism traits to their music , I do not think that their inclusion should be considered further than the odd thread as this one.
If Nico and John Cale will do some very interesting works (John Cale's collab with Terry Riley in the Chruch Of Anthrax album is certainly worth the inclusion and 5* in the archives), VU is too closely linked with Lou Reed, and to qualify his solo work as progressive would create controversy the PA do not need.
